Las Vegas, Nev. -- Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid Wednesday, reacting to Gov. Sarah Palin's comments that the vice president is ''in charge of'' the U.S. Senate, said that the Alaska governor ''obviously knows absolutely nothing'' of the U.S. Constitution.
''It's obvious that she doesn't know anything about the Senate,'' Reid said of Palin. ''The Vice President votes in case of a tie -- which happens rarely, rarely -- and other than that, has ... nothing to do with the Senate or the voting. In case of a tie, they can preside over the Senate -- but that happens rarely itself.''
''She obviously knows absolutely nothing about our Constitution or our country,'' he said.
Palin made the comments Tuesday during an interview, in which she was asked a question from a third grader named Brandon about the role of the vice president.
Her answer: ''A vice president has a really great job because not only are they there to support the president's agenda, they're there like the team member, the teammate to the president ... but also, they're in charge of the United States Senate. So if they want to, they can really get in there with the senators and make a lot of good policy changes that will make life better for Brandon and his family and his classroom. And it's a great job, and I look forward to having that job.''
We caught up with Reid to ask him his thoughts on the latest Palin comment as he cast his ballot Wednesday at the College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas, where he addressed students and led them to cast ballots at the local library.
On other topics, Reid said early voting in states like Nevada could be the key to Barack Obama's chances come Nov. 4. And he lauded the efforts of thousands of California Democrats who are driving, busing and flying in as Democrats push to turn Nevada blue for Obama. Here's his comments on the California effort:
