Remote Use of Someone's Webcam to Stalk & Terrify

I've not understood the logic in using a webcam, unless its for contact with family members that seldom see one another. :/ I know my sister and her kids used one when her husband was away for work for long stretches of time.

Low tech precautions: keep the computer in its own room, cut off from private, or high traffic areas. When not using the webcam, cover the camera, turn it to a blank wall, etc. When my husband bought one, we turned it around to face the wall when not in use and covered it with a bowl. :D

Why? I thought the camera was creepy.

We don't have one anymore, as it got so little use, we gave it away.

Sometimes the best defense is not to be there.

If a webcam must be used, get one with a physical on/off
switch and has "on/off" LED indicator. Another alternative
is to get a frame grabber card and buy cameras that can
be physically turned on/off w/LED and/or its power can be
turned on/off.

Also, be wary of any camera/microphone that is wireless based
w/o encryption or emits RF (analog) signals as these acts like
broadcast stations that can be directly "snooped". It is perhaps
it is more preferable to get LAN on/off w/LED cameras that encrypts
data over physical LAN CAT cables, and perhaps with PoE (Power
over Ethernet) technology.

Lastly, if you have no real-value needs (security/surveillance), then
don't bother getting cameras! Duh! ;)
