Roller Derby Illustrations

Until more recently I haven't contributed here on the forum all that much and in turn doesn't allow myself to be known by many here.

One area of my life that I give a considerable amount of focus to is my involvement with a women's flat track roller derby league here where I live. We are owned and operated solely by the skaters in our membership. We produce live sporting events ("Bouts") each month during the Summer generating most of our revenue for our non-profit. This allows us to continue skating as well as make considerable donations to community causes.

My partner, Jonathan, and myself work together to supply much of the graphics and designs for the league's PR. I've really grown to love this sport more than I could imagine, and have come to appreciate more and more the "printing" and "poster" industries as we continue to produce material for the league's use.

Here are two pieces I've worked on recently. The one in all colour is a 5ft by 5ft cut out style, acrylic painting for spectators to stick their faces in and "become a derby girl" - the other is a personal project. I had considered designing and offering printed derby posters that I would then peddle at games or weekend events to make some extra money. The idea is on the back burning for now. The black and white pencil drawing is a draft of a poster to be.

Hey Katie Jo i like the colours in the roller derby one. I think the black and white one is really beautiful though, the face is so simple but shows expression too, I like it a lot

Ah, it's great to hear about this venture/organisation you guys put together! Thanks for sharing the story behind it.

Great pics :cool2:

Thanks all - I really like the black and white one as well. I call her "Lotus" - when I was first drawing her I would find myself just looking at her face for extended lengths. It's peace-full.

I really like the second one, I agree it's quite peaceful just to look at. Have you ever thought about coloring it in? I love the yin-yang symbols on the wheels!!

Yes - I have worked with Jonathan coloring it digitally. With consideration of making it into a poster (and further brainstormed into possibly a roller derby coloring book) I opted not to color it with pencil or other medium so we could widen the color possibilities and keep a black line drawing accessible for other applications. I'll post the colored version shortly - currently it's on Jonathan's machine.

Nice works and I also really like the b&w one. And it's on a A3 format? Would be interesting to see the digital version too.

You know, off hand I don't know what format. Two large pieces out of my sketchbook taped together to make it "poster size" for a good quality scan. :-)

Thanks for sharing Katie Jo! I too like the second one, it has great lineart.

I was going to suggest something similar. That way you can keep the original lineart and paint it digitally or print out a copy and test coloring with colored pencils or whatnot.
