MOSCOW, Russia — Alexei Dymovsky sits in full uniform and stares at the camera with tired eyes.

“Maybe you don’t know about us, about simple cops, who live and work and love their work. I’m ready to tell you everything. I’m not scared of my own death,” Dymovsky says in a YouTube message addressed to Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

“I will show you the life of cops in Russia, how it is lived, with all the corruption and all the rest – with ignorance, rudeness, recklessness, with honest officers killed because they have stupid bosses.”

And so Dymovsky continues, in a series of three 2-to-7-minute long videos released over the past week that have together garnered 1 million hits on YouTube, and caused a firestorm across Russia.

[...]
“I hope others will listen, other officers who don’t want to live on their knees. I think many will understand. I want to work. But I can no longer stand investigating made-up crimes, imprisoning people we are told to imprison. I can’t stand crimes made-on-order. I’m sick of it all,” he says in one video.

[...]
“I’m a little scared to speak in front of you and the whole country,” Dymovsky says on one video. “I have a wife, who is six months pregnant. But I can’t act differently.”

[...]
A work-related injury prompted Dymovsky’s public appeal, after he says local medical officials refused to treat him. Tabloid website Life.ru ran an interview with the clinic’s main doctor, Zoya Vasilievna, on Tuesday, who said: “This major provoked a very strange feeling — his face carried all the signs of psychopathic person.”

An interior ministry source chose another tack to slam Dymovsky, accusing him of working for foreign agents.

“The chosen method, the form and time of publication of the video, is evidence of the fact that Dymovsky is being used by the support of third parties," the source told Interfax news agency this weekend.

“The leadership of several so-called regional ‘human rights’ groups, sponsored, in part, from abroad are actively participating in this affair,” the source said, singling out USAID, the U.S. government development agency.

The U.S. embassy declined to comment on Tuesday. Dymovsky himself denied the claim on Tuesday, saying he had only met foreigners twice before in his life.

The officer seems genuine at a glance, it would be interesting to see how this progresses. His website:

He is being supposedly accused of "looking" like a psychopath? Considering that nobody looks like a psychopath, it smells like a smear campaign designed to fool those who don't know any better. I have no idea what evidence is being used to accuse him as working for third parties. I guess the key is in what he says and who benefits and how, and what results from this.

It's hard to tell. Psychopaths often seem more genuine than normal people. I'd have to watch it myself to see if he is a bit TOO smoothe.

ADDED: I watched. He's not a psychopath.

That's the general impression I had also, I couldn't detect manipulative language or other tricks to hook people or to "sell" something that would at least suggest an agenda. The ridiculously widespread corruption of Russian police is pretty well-known, and I wouldn't even doubt that their salary is intentionally low to force them to depend on bribes, which is in essence institutionalized corruption. He put himself in a vulnerable position by publicly expressing what everyone already knew but never publicly spoke out about. Who knows, maybe he will ignite a fire that was simmering and waiting for just the right spark in the general population.

He did look sincere, though it is harder to tell because of the language difference. But his body language seemed to match his intonation. Compare his picture on is website to the video.

_http://dymovskiy.ru/ He looks exhausted. What an extraordinary thing to do. Who knows what will come of it?

Considering the levels of corruption in Russian Police forces, I wouldn't be surprised that what he is saying is true.

Russian news site Lenta.ru writes that his department did an investigation of his allegations and came up with nothing. So he was fired for defamation. But, it seems like something is going there because in another Lenta.ru article is mentioned that Dymovsky's press conference was banned from being broadcasted on national (governmental) TV stations. One of he reasons they gave was because his motives were unclear, that they couldn't tell if he was sincere or an adventurist. But basically, no one knows or tells the true reason.

But they also mentioned that another investigation is going to be conducted, this time by Komy Republic's Ministry of Internal Affairs.

At first he seems to be following a script that's too hard for him. This explains that there's some mismatch b\w the flat emotional affects on one hand, and the expected intonation and high-sounding words on the other (sounds like this is the first time in his life that he had to say things like "the officer's honor and dignity" in public and earnestly). He noticeably warms up at a 1-min mark, and by the end of it is positively inspired, speaks easily and clearly.

One more thing is that I think he is drunk. Just a tad, to give himself courage or steady himself. Either that or there's some habitual drinking going on, probably both. There is this certain way in which he stretches words, or mumbles through them with a sort of a slur to his voice, that is characteristic of the influence of alcohol (e.g., at 2:42-2:44, where he says, [vam zhe nichto ne meshaet] etc). There especially you can see that the lower part of the face is a tad "droopy", it doesn't have as much muscle tone as would be normally expected. Also, the lower part of his face has a roundish chunk to it, that is not due to his jaw bone structure alone. The video quality is such that it's hard to see his skin tone, so it's hard to say whether that's a pasty kind of swelling. But these three things together: slurred speech, lax muscle tone and swelling of the lower part of the face -- would be typical of habitual drinkers, due to the fact that alcohol damages facial nerves and salivary glands which develop inflammation and swelling.

He had a press-conference on the radio and people say that he spoke much more clearly, intelligently and forcefully there. His ex-wife dished a lot of dirt on him in a yellow-press mag: she said that he had partaken in the illegal activities himself, and that he has, on at least one occasion, done a similar thing before while drunk -- he called the administration and laid out everything he thought about the way things are, and was totally petrified when they followed up on it later, when he was sober. If that's true -- all right, so he is a mixed bag, like many other people. Regardless, he seems to genuinely mean it; he stands absolutely nothing to gain from this act; he has already been fired from his employment and has no place to go. Reportedly, two other policemen already followed suit, coming out with similar statements.

It's not only in Russia, it's in all Eastern and South-eastern Europe. You don't need to be genious to figure that out especially if you live in one of that countries, it's not only that police is corrupt, the hole state bureaucracy is from top to down, and it's nothing new that policeman are corrupt, they risk their lives for little money and are scared of some mafia bosses that are crazy and are doing what they told them. The real protection you can relay on, especially when you go across road and they stop you because you didn't go across pedestrian crossing. He spoke out about things that everybody knows but are scared to do anything because they know they can lose their jobs or they think they can't do nothing about that, or they don't even care anymore because for them it is a normal aspect of life. There is also deep effect of communism and socialism that is present today. It made people quiet, and todays psychos are using it. The only difference between West and East is that in the West goverment is covering up the truth, and in the East people know the truth but they don't do nothing wich is excellent for PTB. To change corruption you have to get rid of those on power who are hungry for it, and these is practically changing the system, so it's a dead end in todays world. If he will get wider support and I don't think so the government will probably pretend or say they'll do something (maybe use few scapegoats)but in the end everything stays the same.

True. And it gets even worse when west are using that same psychopaths in those countries for their causes, in example: "getting in European community". I am living in such country and I am really feeling like victim of some mad soulless machine.

For his physicality actually he did remind me of one my cousin, who is cop. Same gestures and style of speaking, probably a kind of professional deformation. In his private life my cousin is happy family man with two daughters and one son. Doesn’t drinks.

Guy on the videos also gets emotional where most of "normal" people in that situation would be (drunk or not) i.e. when he speaks of his pregnant wife, what doctor told him about his chest, and when speaking of his boss.

Yes, and in all the discussions of this case in media and internet, nobody has ever disputed the facts of what he's saying. Only the police administration came out with a statement, promising to conduct a thorough investigation and show that "there's no corruption in our region", which was totally laughable. Whatever Dymovsky brings up will be a top of the iceberg, everyone knows that, it's impossible to deny.
