Safe distance from power lines

Hi, next Saturday 15th I have an opportunity to purchase a small piece of land to build a home on that is 150 metres away from a high voltage powerline.

Will you please tell me if this is a safe distance away from the powerline to live? in regards to negative health effects. Regards.

hallowed,
I think it depends on:
1. Voltage amplitude (kV)
2. Number of phases
3. Alternating frequency
4. Height of the towers
...

I personally would not live that close to a high voltage power line. This site gives a good overview of the studies done on the matter.

In the 90's, we forced the government to buy a piece of our land, because they put a high voltage tower smack in the middle of it. We were able to win the case based on the work of Dr. Robert O. Becker (he was one of the pioneers in this field of study). This site also gives some good info. http://www.emfsse.com/emf-perspective.html

So to answer your question, hallowed, living 150 meters from a high voltage power line is not ideal for health.

I agree with Lilou. See here:

Prof Henshaw (referenced in the above article) maintains that for high V power lines, the health threat extends well beyond the point where the elec/mag field drop to acceptable levels. He was attempting to figure out why childhood leukemia was so elevated at longer distance from these power lines than could be explained by direct EMF exposure. His experiments revealed that the high V lines did cause ionization of the air and that these ions could become attached to pollutants and subsequently, end up in the lungs of children living greater distances from the power lines.

I agree with Lilou and LQB. You may not notice any immediate effects but the long term health risks are too great in my opinion.

Do you have any other options elsewhere?

Yes thanks for feedback everybody.... the only information i could find was they are 300kva powerlines .... the other options are in outer suburbs which im not too keen on, because the urban sprawl traffic issues are an issue. I spent alot of time surveying the site, and the land agent measured and said it is exactly 150 metres but i guess if not 100% sure, better to stop getting mentally frustrated and leave it. Cheers.

Well, just from the photo that looks closer than 150 meters to me... Unless those lines are 150 meters off the ground? Is your property line the edge of the fence?

That picture is not where the block of land is. It is just an access road alongside the powerlines in another part of the estate.

The first picture (below) shows the road where the power towers are.

The block of land i am considering purchasing, which you can just make out by the limestone blocks, is off to the left of this road (shown in second photo).

Cheers

I agree with the others.
For 300,000 volts, 150 metres is far too close to raise a family.
I worked in the Electrical Trade for over forty years.
I wouldn't even graze cattle that close.

Thanks MusicMan, i really was not sure, but i just visited the site again this afternoon with a freind, and their opinion is the same. I just wish it was not an issue as everything else about the block is perfect including direction, location to work, size etc. Oh well, just the way it is.

The information i have been reading today is that the magnetic field is apparently not the issue, the issue is that the magnetic field attracts pollution in the air which accumulates around the power lines, and this accumulated pollution releases onto the nearby residents? who knows. Better to be safe than sorry. Cheers.

Thanks LQB and Lilou for those helpful links.
