Saw a fireball on my way home

I've just got home from working in Wales. On my way back, I was driving through a mountainous region on the boarder with England, with trees lining the road either side of me so I could only see a limited amount of sky. There was quite a bit of cloud cover. As I came over a hill the whole sky lit up with a flash. For a split second I thought there must be a thunderstorm, but then I realised the sky lit up green.

I made a note of the time, which was 1:26am. I've just done a search to see if anyone else saw it to confirm my idea of what it was, and sure enough, it has been reported here:

The motorway and surrounding fields lit up for a few seconds, like someone switched the sun on, then when I looked out of the drivers side window, I saw a green and blue ball, it looked like a gas flame.

Wow, sounds like a nice sight TC. Never seen anything as intense in the UK, just the odd 'flying star' type. Hope you made a wish ;)

Too confirm your fireball sighting which was also witnessed by other Brits on the AMS web sight

There definitely more spectacular, brighter and appear to be longer lasting. With accounts of brighter flashes casting shadows thus lighting the darkness. They do catch ones attention.

I have looked on twitter and found people from Manchester, North Warrington and Belfast who saw this. There is also someone who saw one in Argentina but i suspect it was a separate event. NASA had announced that there was a1 mile asteroid passing earth today so i wonder if it is a fragment of this. After I saw it i moved my partner away from the window in case there was a shockwave. It was so bright and amazing! There was no shock wave...

Some of it could be aurora borealis, which has been extremely strong the last week, with visible aurora in greater parts of Europe:
