Scaremonging the people who share things online?

Hello, my name is Jefferson and I use peer-to-peer networks for some time now. I was surprised by the audacity of the RIAA again when I read these articles:

http://www.computeractive.co.uk/vnunet/news/2142972/p2p-company-falls
http://www.montereyherald.com/mld/montereyherald/news/politics/15500928.htm

Now try to access the old ed2k website: www.edonkey.com

Wow....sound like scare tactics at least to me!

But the thing that worries me is the "scalation" of the process, even culminating in the close-down of the Internet itself...reading the signs over the past few years I know it is not a question of if...but of when!

Comments and more info are welcome!

P.S: there is a discussion at the following site:

I especially love how they tell you what your IP is and that it has been logged. Sounds like they're trying to say that just by visiting that website I did something wrong already, sounds like a threat. I mean really, if their point is that I'm not anonymous when downloading certain "illegal content", what does that have to do with "your IP has been logged" in terms of visiting their website!? Are they equating visiting the edonkey website to downloading illegal content? In other words, "We can find you when you download illegal content! Your IP is <this>, see we found you already!"

Exactly...and the funny part (ridiculous I should say) is that every website can and probably will have your internet protocol number if you dare access it! Knowledge protects!

IP is kind of like your computers internet address for your computer. look into proxy servers they make it much harder to track you on the web and you would have to download extremely large amount of downloads to even try to think about bothering to do it and its hard even then. (look into the diffrent kinds of proxy serves out there some are better than others)

i would also suggest using Peerguardian 2 for futher protection make sure you update it often it makes it even harder so unless you are download a couple of gigabites (usally dozens of GB) a week they are not likely to go after you they want to catch the big fish to scare all the little fish away and the same goes with the servers

and edonkey i think is kind of outdated espencially if the goverment or coperations are anouncing they are trying to shut it down or they are getting paid an out of court settlement.

i am not telling this so you can download but so it harder for them to find out what web pages you have visited.

I don't think any of us can protect and hide ourselves when going on the net.

Don't you think they already have the technology (Echelon type of thing) to sniff out anything we're doing ?

The weirdest thing to me is that they're going for the usual peer to peer programs but they don't go after Usenet groups.

Also they are protecting first the rights of the major music and movie companies, they don't care if you're only interested in "underground" music or unknow movies or so it seems.

it's almost impossibly hard for joe-6-pack computeruser to figure out how to access usenet.
the MPAA and RIAA are going after the no-clue people for whom it is a major achievement to download from edonkey/bittorrent/etc.

i'd say usenet-savy people are about 1-2% of internet users, not worth going after...

my opinion on piracy: making copies of dvd's/cds/etc. for you and your friends FOR FREE is perfectly fine with me, but if you try to make a PROFIT from pirating/downloading, you deserve to be busted.
