Professor faked 61 pieces of research

Monday 23 September 2013

A former professor at Amsterdam’s VU university published at least 61 pieces of faked research over a 15-year period, the Volkskrant reports on Monday.

Mart Bax, who retired in 2002, was involved in fraud for at least 15 years, publishing invented research, recycling his work under other names and lying about awards and other work, the Volkskrant says.

The university is not taking any legal steps against Bax, a political anthropologist, because he stopped working 11 years ago. The results of a formal investigation into Bax will be published later on Monday.

In 2011, Tilburg professor Diederik Stapel was sacked after it emerged he had faked research data in at least 30 scientific papers.

EDIT: added note

This is what he looks like. It's the only photograph I could find.

I've tried to find other sources in English but so far no luck.
Maybe tomorrow when the result of the final verdict in the investigative rapport gets more widely known?

EDIT: spelling

Its interesting to note that it seems so much easier to commit such fraud in the field of human sciences. Its a lot more difficult for peer reviewers to reproduce fuzzy results than it is to redo a physics experiment.

According to the rector magnificus of the university Mart Bax has been punished enough, because his reputation has been utterly destroyed. :O
Excuse me? That is all the RM has to say? Bax will still get his pension. No consequences for him. At the same time students (from an Islamic school) that were allegedly involved in so-called fraud with their exams were interrogated and even arrested by the police. :headbash:

This attitude is part of the problem. The widespread corruption of science is reinforced by a colossal system of incentives and no disincentives to balance it out. FWIW.

Couldn't discover more than just one new article in English today. It can be found here:

Academic fraud discovered at Leiden Univ. hospital

Posted on Jun 17, 2016 by Janene Pieters

The Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) discovered that one of their former researchers committed academic fraud. The researcher tampered with the results of DNA tests in two scientific articles, the hospital said in a statement. LUMC informed the publisher of the articles and asked that they be taken offline.

According to LUMC, no patients were involved in the studies and the researcher has been working for another university for some time.

The fraud was discovered when another researcher repeated the DNA tests and got vastly different results. This triggered an investigation which showed that the results were tampered with. “We are grateful to the PhD candidate who brought the manipulation to light”, Pancras Hogendoorn, LUMC deacon and member of the Board of Directors, said in the statement. “Scientific integrity is our top priority. I find it essential to maintain the trust of patients, researchers and society.”

The name of the employee involved was not disclosed. LUMC did inform his new employer about what happened.
