Search problem

Thomas Alan

The Living Force
Don't know where this came from or how to solve it.
When I try to search the forum from the search box another box appears with search links in it. When I close this box and click search on the forum I am taken to a google search of the term not the forum search.

I first noticed the box when doing a Start Page search. There it also appears but still lets me do a start page search.

How do I get rid of the cockroach?

Hi Mac,

When you search using the search function at the top right hand corner of the page, if you select "Entire Site" that does default to Google search results. Note that depending on where you at, the search options are different. So for example if you are at the "Start Page" the selectable options are, "Entire Forum" "Entire Site" and "Members".

If you are on a board say, "Movies & Trivia", then an additional selectable option "this board" appears. When you then select a topic in that board, say, Bourne Trilogy, then another search option, "this topic" appears.

If you use the Search function from the menu bar at the top of each page, then selectable Search Parameters are presented for you to check or uncheck. The default "check all" is automatically selected. You can uncheck that and then you can click on the "+" sign where it says"Choose a board to search in, or search all" and check only the boards that you want to search in.

Hope that clarifies it for you. :)

You get redirected to Google each time you select the option "Entire Site" bellow the search box which means Google will start a search with content + site:www.cassiopaea.org. But I don't understand what you mean with a second box containing search links.

EDIT: Vulcan59 was first.

Ok, I've been on the Forum for years and didn't know that. :-[
The white box that appeared had a disable function in it, that eventually made it disappear after several tries.

By "Start Page" I meant the search engine. _http://startpage.com/ The white box appears there sometimes too.

So thanks, learned something new and useful.

Hi Mac,

Okay thanks for the clarification. Unfortunately, I don't seem to have the same problem as you. Perhaps it's some kind of malware in your system, but I am not sure since I don't have the problem you are facing. If you could capture some screen shots, that might be helpful.

"SearchFu" :lol:

The most important part of any online search is choosing your "keyword(s)." Try to think of the most unique word or words that would be in what you're searching for, but would be the most unlikely to find in other topics.

Once you've got your keyword or words chosen, use the little search box in the upper right hand corner. Choose where you want to search (a specific topic, board or the entire forum) with the drop down menu..then add in your carefully chosen keyword.

Like everything else, it takes time and practice to learn how to develop good "SearchFu" If you're having a problem choosing keywords (the most common problem with beefy search returns) post a few examples and we can work on keyword selection :)

OK thank you all see my SearchFu failed because I tried searching for search help and got all kinds of post with Search in the post lol. So I will play around and try to refine the keywords and focus more on specific boards to weed out the extra stuff. I have been normally doing searches from the Home page and searching the entire forums which brings back tons of stuff.
