seen from a plane

I wonder if any pilots/aviation experts can explain something to me?
I was on a plane coming in to London's Heathrow airport on a clear and sunny day.
(Yes, we do have 'em) The plane was following the line of the River Thames over Greenwich and Blackheath
As I was looking out of the window, about four or five lemon coloured spherical object either flew past just below the plane,
or the plane passed them as it was flying faster, I couldn't tell. They looked to be the size of a small football.
Any ideas anyone?
