Sunday February 23rd, 2014 - Show #54: Revolution in Ukraine and Venezuela - Interview with journalist Finian Cunningham

This week we’re going to take a closer look at the chaos unfolding in Ukraine and Venezuela. We’ll be joined by Finian Cunningham, an Irish journalist who has written extensively on international affairs, with articles published in several languages. For nearly 20 years, he worked as an editor and writer in major news media organisations, including The Mirror, Irish Times and Independent.

Deported from Bahrain in June 2011 because of his critical journalism in which he highlighted systematic human rights violations by regime forces, Cunningham is now a columnist on international politics for Press TV and the Strategic Culture Foundation.

We hope you'll join us, we're live from 2-4pm EST (8-10pm CET).

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to it too! I've read many articles by FC on SOTT over the last few years, and it's always well-written, very good analysis. Would be great to get his insights on how they're doing what they're doing in Venezuela and Ukraine.

I second that.

Kudos to you SOTT radio team, you always manage to get the most interesting guests for the show.

Indeed.
I think these radio shows really help me with my thinking. These processes behind the scenes in Ukraine and Venezuela, but also behind the trial of Amanda Knox are so insidious and confusing sometimes, at least for me. But when I hear the SOTT crew explain and analyse things, it all becomes crystal clear.

One remark about the death penalty. I heard from a person that is politically active in my country that the EU has introduced the death penalty again, but has worded it in such a way that it is super vague.

b) Article 2 of the Protocol No 6 to the ECHR:
A State may make provision in its law for the death penalty in respect of acts committed in time of war or of imminent threat of war; such a penalty shall be applied only in the instances laid down in the law and in accordance with its provisions.

So, when countries joined the EU did they reinstate the death penalty? According to Wikipedia "[t]he European Union (EU) has long since been against the death penalty, supporting the European Convention, and its 2000 Charter of Fundamental Rights included an absolute ban on the death penalty in all circumstances".
"The Council of Europe has made abolition of the death penalty a prerequisite for membership."

Just listened to this show. Another one I really enjoyed, even though Finian Cunningham wasn't able to be reached. The thing about the situation in the Ukraine that made it possible to pull the kind of crap that the West is pulling again, seems to be that there are already some divisions in the population and some legitimate historical grievances that can be made to come out. And the tactics of hystericizing the population while a bunch of thugs are running wild destroying anything insight and using extreme violence seems to be just the ticket to confuse the people at large and not see what's really happening.

But I agree with what you guys touched on that this is probably a bridge too far for the Western elites. And the eastern, culturally and linguistically Russian part of the country is the center of economic and financial power and resources. I've also had the conversation with my brother about why the president didn't crack down hard and early, and I was saying that he'd be screwed whatever he did. When there's a closely divided situation internally, that would be a very bad situation to initiate where just a little less than half the population is against you. Damned if you do, damned if you don't....

It was about the Lisbon Treaty that I read about the relativity of the Death Penalty in Europe. Here is a short video that explains it. By the way all countries signed the Treaty and the people not move a finger against it.

This video has a music of Michael Jackson, a little annoying. I just cut the sound.
