This is a pretty big highway with the southbound lanes closed due to sinkhole even if they are blaming a collapsed pipe.

A large sink hole opened up on the southbound lanes of I-83/Harrisburg Expressway early Saturday morning as PennDOT crews were working to repair a depression in the highway that was caused by a collapsed underground pipe.

As the hole opened up, PennDOT and the Pennsylvania State Police closed the southbound lanes of I-83 at Exit 4 (PA 851) in Shrewsbury for the safety of motorists.

All traffic is being directed westbound on PA 851 and the southbound on the combination of Main Street, Susquehanna Trail and York Road.

Motorists can reenter the southbound lanes of the Harrisburg Expressway in Maryland at Old York Road.

PennDOT expects the repairs to be completed and the road reopened by the end of the day on Sunday.

In the meantime, motorists should expect significant delays.

The northbound lanes of I-83 are open.

I guess not a big issue since all lanes are now open after doing a little more searching.

The southbound lanes of Interstate 83 have been reopened just north of the Maryland/Pennsylvania state line.

WBAL's Jim Russ reports the sinkhole developed as crews were repairing an underground drainage pipe.

Work to repair the collapsed pipe began Friday evening.

One lane was closed at that time.

According to PennDOT, the highway was closed around 1 a.m. Saturday when the sinkhole was discovered.

Southbound I-83 traffic was diverted at the last exit in Pennsylvania (Exit 4 Shrewsbury/Stewartstown) for about 24 hours.

All lanes were reopened around midnight on Sunday.

Officials say more than 20,000 cars use that stretch of I-83 everyday.

"Collapsed pipe" eh? Just as likely the sinkhole collapsed the pipe rather than the collapsing of the pipe caused the sinkhole.
