Something in the sky

Ok, I need some help identifying something
Tonight at about 7.15pm (it was already dark) I saw several craft flying over a main road (in Suffolk) I was driving down.
One appeared to be a helicopter (several flashing lights, slow moving), however two of the craft caught my eye....
The first I saw flying away from me, as two large solid white lights and a small red light in the middle.
The road turned and I drove under the second one, the two large white lights appeared as spot lights pointing forwards from the craft, with the small red light (about the size of light you expect on a plane/helicopter) centrally behind the other two.
The craft where slow moving (50mph?), and relatively low to the ground (300meters?)....although scale/distance can be hard to judge in the dark.

I did wonder if they where landing lights.. _http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aircraft_landing_lights
However, from that wiki the landing lights are about 50 times too small!!!

Imagine a light aircraft with 2 half meter circular search lights strapped to each wing.....or if the scale was bigger than I thought this arcraft below....but the spot lights where the size of the engine intakes

The lights where massive and constant.....and mostly directed forwards. I could see this clearly as being very slightly misty they cast beams.
Found a picture that may help illustrate the scale. Imagine two of the searchlights below strapped to a mid sized planes wings.

It was weird but could have a completely ordinary explanation. I've never seen anything like it before.
Anyone got any suggestions as to what they may be? I'll have to do some digging.

I didn't know weather to pull over and take some snaps at the time or not...it was all so sudden. If I ever see them again I will mind.
