Song of the Sea (2014)

The Living Force
This is a beautiful Irish animated movie, made by the same people who made The Secret of Kells, about a young brother and sister who discover a mystical world that is intertwined with their own and end up on an adventure to help Saoirse find her voice to free the fairies from an old witch's spell. I liked The Secret of Kells so much that I had been waiting for this to come out after hearing that they were making it--contrary to many other movies these days, I was not disappointed. I think the animation may have been a little more impressive in this one than in Kells, but both are quite beautiful in my opinion.

"Saoirse is a child who is the last of the selkies, women in Irish and Scottish legends who transform from seals into people. She escapes from her grandmother's home to journey to the sea and free fairy creatures trapped in the modern world."

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT ***

I really like how this film deals with emotional complexity. There are both positive and negative parts and parts that are both simultaneously. I liked the old witch and how she was a complex character who became a generally evil person out of seeing her son in great pain and being too afraid to face her own. I also thought it was interesting that she fed on negative emotions and that by taking a person's negative emotions, they turned to stone (I took that as being unable to feel anything anymore). I really enjoyed watching the relationship between Ben and Saoirse develop and how he came to appreciate her and care for her from his heart, instead of feeling obliged to do so. I also found the ending to be very moving--a mix of happy and sad.

Saw this too and liked it a lot, also found it very mature emotionally, some characters, specially the women, showed a wide pallete of motives, fears, dreams and emotions. Also the mythological characters are worth discussing. Definitely recommended.
