An article in my local paper about the anti-fat propaganda promoted the past 40 years, cited a book by Dr. Paul Offit, Pandora's Lab: Seven Stories of Science Gone Wrong (2017). It looks like a book that would be especially helpful for someone who's begun to be a little skeptical about blindly trusting the "experts".
Here's the blurb from Amazon:
“After spending years compiling a list of 50 of the world’s worst inventions, [Offit] conducted his own sad version of March Madness to whittle it down to just a handful of finalists…all have proved to be disastrous for human health."—The Washington Post
The irony (if not psychopathic deviousness) of Dr. Offit writing a book with this theme is that he is a widely-quoted promoter, defender and apologist for the vaccine industry (after earning $30-55 million from his “RotaTeq” rotavirus vaccine). Offit is also a founding advisory board member of the Autism Science Foundation. Autism has been linked to the MMR (measles/mumps/rubella) vaccine by Whistleblower vaccine scientist from the CDC, Dr. William Thompson himself in a stunning confession. Paul Offit is also the author of a sketchy medical narrative: “Autism’s False Prophets.”
The program “Every Child by Two” and Dr. Paul Offit received hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding from Pharmaceutical companies that manufacture vaccines. They claim this has no influence on their vaccine “safety” stance, but this has been exposed otherwise by reliable journalists.

What happens when “scientific” studies and the “experts” lead us down the wrong path?
History is filled with “brilliant ideas” that gave rise to disaster, and this book explores the most fascinating—and significant—missteps: from opium being the pain reliever of choice, to becoming a major cause of death in the U.S.; from cheaper, tastier vegetable oil eclipsing animal fat as a food staple, to becoming a major cause of a heart disease epidemic; and from DDT being banned for the sake of the environment, to its discontinuation causing an epidemic rise in world malaria.
These are today's sins of science—as deplorable as mistaken past ideas about advocating racial purity or using lobotomies as a cure for mental illness. These unwitting errors add up to seven lessons both cautionary and profound. Dr. Paul A. Offit uses these lessons to investigate how we can separate good science from bad, using some of today's most controversial ideas—e-cigarettes, GMOs, drug treatments for ADHD [but note, he excludes the most controversial idea of all, vaccines]—as case studies. For every "Aha!" moment that should have been an "Oh no," this book is an engrossing account of how science has been misused disastrously—and how we can learn to use its power for good.
