Sunrise this morning was proceeded by a brilliant vertical beam of light. Reminded me of this article http://www.sott.net/articles/show/221577-Strange-beams-of-light-over-Ottawa-area-due-to-ice-crystals-in-air. Please feel free to merge this with another thread if appropriate. We are getting some light snow right now and we're supposed to have some really cold weather here this weekend (-30F), so I think this is probably from ice crystals in the air. It was beautiful, so I took a couple of photos just before it rose. The digital camera kind of makes it look like a flame:
