This morning I encountered a twitter thread about a very unsettling story.
A woman from Sacramento California named Brittney Pearson was hired as a surrogate by a couple. While pregnant, Brittney received a breast cancer diagnosis. Chemo treatments compatible with pregnancy did not work and the cancer began to spread, so she decided to deliver the baby early at 25 weeks so she could receive the chemo treatment she needed while giving the baby a chance of survival. The purchasing couple didn't want to pay Brittney for a baby born before 38 weeks due to the potential health problems of a premature baby and instead demanded its immediate termination. She offered to adopt the child herself but the adopting couple were alleged to have said they didn't want their DNA "out there." Since she signed a surrogacy contract her all rights to the child were waived as its rightful mother. Once the child was delivered at 25 weeks the legal owners of the child demanded premature neonatal intensive care be withheld so the child died. Being California of course that type of "abortion" is 100% legal.
