A senior Syrian official has warned against any Turkish military action inside Syrian territory after Turkey's Parliament passed a government motion authorizing such action in Iraq and Syria as part of efforts to combat the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Miqdad said any Turkish military action in Syria will be considered an act of aggression, according to Iran's Press TV.
Miqdad also accused Turkey and Saudi Arabia of sending militants to Syria and called on the United Nations Security Council to hold an emergency session to condemn the motion passed in Turkey's Parliament.
Opposition parties criticized the motion saying it is an excuse to militarily confront the Syrian regime using the ISIL threat as a pretext. The motion cites both ISIL and the Syrian regime, as well as the the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and other terrorist groups as potential threats.
The government says it supports a US-led international coalition against ISIL but also calls for simultaneous action against the Syrian regime, saying its brutal oppression of the opposition is responsible for the growth of radical groups.
