Hello Everyone,

Any ideas how to approach diet for someone who has SLE, Seizures, rheumatoid arthritis, and went through stroke ?

I would think starting with Ultra simple diet for rather extended period, and then moving unto Life without bread diet would be a good idea to stick to. But I do not know nuances of such conditions. Considering that possibly kidney get affected through SLE, how to go about protein intake as far as meat/fat diet ? Would be safe for the person to switch to such diet ?

Any tips ? Any recommendations ? I am little bit puzzled, because I hear people with RA issues would be gaining weight, but the person on contrary is very thin.

I am planing to read "The Autoimmune Epidemic", by Donna Jackson Nakazawa, perhaps I can find many answers there.

Thank You.

Admin note: corrected "systematic lupus" to "systemic lupus"

Re: Systematic Lupus, Seizures, Rheumatoid arthritis, stroke and the diet

I recall lupus being mentioned in something I read recently, but I have not been able to find it again, even searching on my Kindle. I only found one reference, in The Vegetarian Myth, to lupus being connected to lectins in plant foods.

The "food" books we have been reading recently have much to say about autoimmune disorders -- some of it specific to RA -- and low-carb diet, however. These books include Primal Body, Primal Mind, The Vegetarian Myth, Life Without Bread, Fiber Menace, and Lights Out. Some passages state the need for caution when embarking on a low-carb diet when autoimmune disease is present.

The modern version of the ketogenic diet started out as a treatment for seizures, and the only reason it isn't prescribed more often for that now is that drugs are regarded as "more convenient" (i.e. it would cut into drug sales).

Primal Body, Primal Mind mentions the value of vitamin D for dealing with autoimmune disorders and RA. They can also be symptoms of dehydration, or magnesium deficiency.

Hi Megan,

Thank you very much for providing information. I haven't read all the books yet and I definitely must catch up.

It's so true what you say, and it's really sad it happens to people.

Hi Agni,
My reply is merely a tip for further searching around ketogenic diet.
There is a site which deals with a lots of details about epilepsy and ketogenic diet - Mathews Friends.

http://site.matthewsfriends.org/index.php?page=getting-started.

They are also giving some base material for what they are saying in medical section / medical papers.

I have found one paper from 2005
"Worldwide Use of the Ketogenic Diet"
Eric H. Kossof and Jane R. McGrogan; Epilepsia. 46(2): 280-289

Paper is free of charge and easily found typed in google.

which is referring to specialists on ketogenic diet worldwide. Almost in every country in the world there is somebody dealing with that subject so maybe You will find someone for first link for Your search.

From my experience and what I have read until now it is good to prepare oneself before starting ketogenic diet. And also is important to know possible complications which I am going to post in separate thread.

DMSO has been used successfully to treat victims of strokes, but I'm not sure how success in treatment relates to the length of time after the stroke the DMSO is given. You could check out the book 'DMSO Nature's Healer' by Dr Morton Walker for more information.
