A clay tablet that has baffled scientists for more than a century has been identified as a witness's account of an asteroid that hit the Earth 5,000 years ago.

Geologists have long puzzled over the shape of the land close to the town of Köfels in the Austrian Alps.

But now researchers claim to have finally found the answer.

They say the tablet's symbols give a detailed account of how a mile-long asteroid hit the region, causing thousands of deaths and devastating more than one million sq km (386,000 sq miles).

The impact, equivalent to more than 1,000tons of TNT exploding, would have created one of the world's biggest-ever landslides.

The theory is the work of two rocket scientists - Alan Bond and Mark Hempsell - who have spent the past eight years piecing together the archaeological puzzle.

At its heart is a clay tablet called the Planisphere, discovered by the Victorian archaeologist Henry Layard in the remains of the library of the Royal Palace at Nineveh.

Using computers to recreate the night sky thousands of years ago, they have pinpointed the sighting described on the tablet - a 700BC copy of notes of the night sky as seen by a Sumerian astrologer in one of the world's earliest-known civilisations - to shortly before dawn on June 29 in the year 3123BC.

Half the tablet records planet positions and clouds, while the other half describes the movement of an object looking like a 'stone bowl' travelling quickly across the sky.

The description matches a type of asteroid known as an Aten type, which orbits the Sun close to the Earth. Its trajectory would have put it on a collision course with the Otz Valley.

'It came in at a very low angle - around six degrees - and then clipped a mountain called Gaskogel around 11km from Köfels,' said Mr Hempsell.

'This caused it to explode - and as it travelled down the valley it became a fireball.

'When it hit Köfels it created enormous pressures which pulverised the rock and caused the landslide. But because it wasn't solid, there was no crater.'

The explosion would have created a mushroom cloud, while a plume of smoke would have been seen for hundreds of miles.

Mr Hempsell said another part of the tablet, which is 18cm across and shaped like a bowl, describes a plume of smoke around dawn the following morning.

'You need to know the context before you can translate it,' said Mr Hempsell, of Bristol University.

Geologists have dated the landslide to around 9,000 years ago, far earlier than the Sumerian record. However, Mr Hempsell, who has published a book on the theory, believes contaminated samples from the asteroid may have confused previous dating attempts.

He has also claimed the tablet may describe the destruction of the Biblical cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, but this has been dismissed by other scientists.

Academics were also quick to disagree with the findings, which were published in A Sumerian Observation of the Köfels's Impact Event.

John Taylor, a retired expert in Near Eastern archaeology at the British Museum, said there was no evidence that the ancient Sumerians were able to make such accurate astronomical records, while our knowledge of Sumerian language was incomplete.

'I remain unconvinced by these results,' he added
It is interesting that this story present the hypothesis of a cometary impact, as opposed to "the hand of God" being responsible for the destruction of Sodom and Gommorah. It as also interesting to note that the two scientists involved in this work, have stated that due to the cometary impact, the standard carbon dating method would likely be contaminated by the debri from the comet. This is very similar to Laura's arguments about the problems using carbon dating as explained in SHOTW. Also note the thought police already seem to be out to discredit the evidence, claiming that the Sumerians could were not able to make such accurate observations of astranomical events.

Normally the Mail is a propoganda rag (IMHO), but I find it interesting that there seems to be more and more in the MSM regarding cataclysmic goings on in our past and past commetary bombardments. Are the PTB trying to prepare us for the shocks to come? Just last week there was this from the BBC about the largest UK impact site:

http://news(dot)bbc(dot)co(dot)uk/2/hi/science/nature/7314329(dot)stm

Evidence of the biggest meteorite ever to hit the British Isles has been found by a team of scientists.

Researchers from the universities of Oxford and Aberdeen think a large object hit north-west Scotland about 1.2 billion years ago.

The space rock struck the ground near the present-day town of Ullapool, they report in Geology journal.

The scientists found what they believe to be debris which was flung out when the impact crater was formed.

"If there had been human observers in Scotland 1.2 billion years ago, they would have seen quite a show," said co-author Ken Amor, from the University of Oxford.

"The massive impact would have melted rocks and thrown up an enormous cloud of vapour that scattered material over a large part of the region around Ullapool. The crater was rapidly buried by sandstone which helped to preserve the evidence."

The crater is suspected to lie under the Minch, the waterway that separates Lewis in the Outer Hebrides from the north-west Highlands of Scotland.

Unusual rock formations in the area were previously thought to have been formed by volcanic activity.

But Ken Amor and his colleagues found "ejecta blanket" evidence buried in rocks from the area. This represents debris thrown out when the huge object slammed into the ground.

Ejected material from the meteorite strike is scattered over an area about 50km across.

In the rocks, the researchers found elevated levels of the element iridium, which is characteristic of extra-terrestrial material. They also found microscopic parallel fractures that also imply a meteorite strike.

Co-author John Parnell, a geologist at the University of Aberdeen, said: "Building up the evidence has been painstaking, but has resulted in proof of the largest meteorite strike known in the British Isles."

Mr Amor said this was the "most spectacular evidence for a meteorite impact within the British Isles found to date".

He added: "What we have discovered about this meteorite strike could help us to understand the ancient impacts that shaped the surface of other planets, such as Mars."

The proposed volcanic origin for the rock formations had previously been a puzzle, as there are no volcanic vents or other volcanic sediments nearby.

The UK's only other known space impact location is Silverpit in the North Sea. Scientists have found evidence on the sea floor for a cataclysmic asteroid or comet strike that occurred some 60-65 million years ago. The impact structure is about 130km (80 miles) east of the Yorkshire coast.

Some researchers, though, have questioned its space origins.

Interesting....thought I'd link the image of the stone tablet

Just a random thought...
Normally the Mail is a propoganda rag (IMHO), but I find it interesting that there seems to be more and more in the MSM regarding cataclysmic goings on in our past and past commetary bombardments. Are the PTB trying to prepare us for the shocks to come?
Funny I had the same thought back when the films Armagedon and Deep Impact came out....although I couldn't clarify that thought any further then....
Just my personal opinion but I don't think the PTB would ever prepare (I am assuming you meant this in a more positive light) us for shocks to come...they may try and passify us about coming shocks...or use it as a weapon of fear...perhaps even release it as a gloat to/finger in the eye to those in the know.
Anyway, it reminded me of this quote from the C's in the ID4 thread

Q: (L) All right, last week, when we shut down for the night we had asked a question about the movie ID4, Independence Day, and we were told to ask
further questions about this, so that gives us a clue that there might be something significant there. Does anybody remember what the question was that I asked?
(T) Is there any significance to the ID4 movie?
A: Sure.
Q: (L) What was the primary intention of the makers of this movie? The primary message that they attempted to convey?
A: Infuse thinking patterns with [planchette swirled a few times here] concept of aliens.
Q: (L) They intended to infuse thinking patterns with concept of aliens... was there any particular slant on aliens, per se, that was seen as desirable in the making
of this movie?
A: Slant?
Q: (L) Slant, in other words, did they wish to present them inaccurately to confuse people, to present them as something to be feared and fought against, or to
make them appear so completely erroneous, so that when actual aliens do appear, that they will not be perceived as negative?
A: Infuse.
Q: (L) Infuse. Just the concept, the concept of aliens in general. OK...
A: Part of a larger project.
Q: (L) And what is this project?
A: Called "Project Awaken."
Q: (L) And who is behind, or in charge of, this project?
A: Many.
Q: (L) Who are the primary group, groups or individuals? I'm sure you're not going to give us individuals, but just the grouping.
A: Thor's Pantheum.
Q: (L) And what is Thor's Pantheum?
A: Sub-select trainees for transfer of enlightenment frequency graduation.
Q: (L) What is enlightenment frequency graduation?
A: Think!
Q: (L) Enlightenment frequency graduation... so, sub-select trainees...
A: Self explanatory.
Q: (L) Well, is this group STS or STO?
A: Both.

From a paleoclimate perspective the impact would surely explain the global cooling which occurred around 5200 BP. The story of the frozen Alpine iceman now makes sense:

From several points of view, the Alpine Iceman found in September
1991 in the Tyrolean Alps is the most exciting European
archaeological discovery in recent years (Ho¨ pfel et al., 1992).
Radiocarbon dated to 5320–5050 cal. yr BP (Kutschera and
Mu¨ ller, 2003), he appears to be the oldest well preserved prehistoric
body ever discovered in Europe, even older than the
Egyptian royal mummies. It has been hypothesised that the
striking preservation of this Neolithic man and his equipment
resulted from a quick burial below snow and ice cover owing
to rapid climate cooling (Baroni and Orombelli, 1996). This
paper presents palaeoenvironmental and archaeological evidence
of an abrupt climate change at 5550–5300 cal. yr BP at
Arbon Bleiche, Lake Constance (Switzerland), i.e. ca. 110km
west of the Tyrolean Alps. Cooler and wetter conditions associated
with this climatic oscillation may actually have favoured
the rapid burial of the Alpine Iceman. Moreover, climatic
changes possibly correlative to this event can be observed in
many palaeoclimatic records from both hemispheres. This suggests
a more global significance of the climate oscillation
recorded at Arbon Bleiche that was responsible for the preservation
of the Alpine Iceman, and allows increasing understanding
of the mechanisms and underlying forcing factors of this
mid-Holocene climatic reversal.

Redfox, I tend to agree with you that none of the STS Powers That Be would want us prepared for whats to come. In light of the recent and ongoing attack on Laura as she begun to focus her editorials more on the coming cometary bombardments, this would be counter-productive I think. However as you've shown with your quote of the C's session, it is possible that there may be some people in positions of power who may have a consience or empathy towards others, who may or may not be able to slow leak some information out there or exert some influence. This was what I had meant to convey, thanks for pointing out my mistake.

I think if we had full access to the records that Im sure the PTB have regarding cometary impacts, a great deal more of our historical events would make a lot more sense.

No worries....it reminded me exactly of what I'd thought years ago but couldn't quantify 'Perhaps the PTB are trying to tell us something/prepare us'....only on reading that again did it remind me and all the stuff I'm currently learning sort of clicked into place. So thought it was worth sharing my thoughts on it.

Rick...very interesting, I remember watching a documentary on the iceman years ago....its weird seeing parts of the puzzle fall into place.

Appollynon, the mentioned clay table shows the reality, I say. Just recently I have added some of my comments into the
Outer Space and "Inner Space" Sciences / Evidence Mounts that Our Sun May Have a Companion -thread. There you can see a timing and the reason why I am convinced by that the interpreters of the tablet have made a good job on their fields. At least, its table a hard written evidence.

What really annoys me is the Christian faith's preoccupation with the 'vice' that they say God destroyed the city for. Completely misses the point, I think. As if God would waste time 'punishing' humanity for the 'wrong' type of sex. I find the Jewish perspective about Sodom's vices far more illuminating and worrying, as I can see the parallels in the modern era. No wonder Lot wanted to leave.

Jewish[edit]

Rictor Norton views classical Jewish texts as stressing the cruelty and lack of hospitality of the inhabitants of Sodom to the "stranger".[41] The people of Sodom were seen as guilty of many other significant sins. Rabbinic writings affirm that the Sodomites also committed economic crimes, blasphemy and bloodshed.[42] One of the worst was to give money or even gold ingots to beggars, after inscribing their names on them, and then subsequently refusing to sell them food. The unfortunate stranger would end up starving and after his death, the people who gave him the money would reclaim it.

A rabbinic tradition, described in the Mishnah, postulates that the sin of Sodom was related to property: Sodomites believed that "what is mine is mine, and what is yours is yours" (Abot), which is interpreted as a lack of compassion. Another rabbinic tradition is that these two wealthy cities treated visitors in a sadistic fashion. One major crime done to strangers was almost identical to that of Procrustes in Greek mythology. This would be the story of the "bed" that guests to Sodom were forced to sleep in: if they were too short they were stretched to fit it, and if they were too tall, they were cut up (indeed, in Hebrew and Yiddish, the corresponding term for a Procrustean bed is a "Sodom bed").

In another incident, Eliezer, Abraham's servant, went to visit Lot in Sodom and got in a dispute with a Sodomite over a beggar, and was hit in the forehead with a stone, making him bleed. The Sodomite demanded Eliezer pay him for the service of bloodletting, and a Sodomite judge sided with the Sodomite. Eliezer then struck the judge in the forehead with a stone and asked the judge to pay the Sodomite.

The Talmud and the Sefer haYashar (midrash) also recount two incidents of a young girl (one involved Lot's daughter Paltith) who gave some bread to a poor man who had entered the city. When the townspeople discovered their acts of kindness, they burned Paltith and smeared the other girl's body with honey and hung her from the city wall until she was eaten by bees. (Sanhedrin 109a.) It is this gruesome event, and her scream in particular, the Talmud concludes, that are alluded to in the verse that heralds the city's destruction: "So[43] said, 'Because the outcry of Sodom and Gomorrah has become great, and because their sin has been very grave, I will descend and see...'"[Gen 18:20-21]

A modern orthodox position is one that holds, "The paradigmatic instance of such aberrant behavior is found in the demand of the men of Sodom to 'know' the men visiting Lot, the nephew of Abraham, thus lending their name to the practice of 'sodomy'."[44]

The scholar and activist Jay Michaelson proposes a reading of the story of Sodom that emphasizes the violation of hospitality as well as the violence of the Sodomites. "Homosexual rape is the way in which they violate hospitality—not the essence of their transgression. Reading the story of Sodom as being about homosexuality is like reading the story of an ax murderer as being about an ax."[45] Michaelson places the story of Sodom in context with other Genesis stories regarding Abraham's hospitality to strangers, and argues that when other texts in the Hebrew Bible mention Sodom, they do so without commentary on homosexuality. The verses cited by Michaelson include Jeremiah 23:14,[Jeremiah 23:14] where the sins of Jerusalem are compared to Sodom and are listed as adultery, lying, and strengthening the hands of evildoers; Amos 4:1-11 (oppressing the poor and crushing the needy);[Amos 4:1-11] and Ezekiel 16:49-50,[Ezekiel 16:49-50] which defines the sins of Sodom as "pride, fullness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. And they were haughty, and did toevah before me, and I took them away as I saw fit." Michaelson uses toevah in place of abomination to emphasize the original Hebrew, which he explains as being more correctly translated as "taboo".[46]

Christian[edit]

Several theories have been advanced in Christian thought concerning the sin of Sodom. One area of dispute is whether the mob was demanding the homosexual rape of Lot’s guests. A second area of dispute is whether the act of homosexuality or the act of inhospitality and violence toward foreigners is the more significant ethical downfall of Sodom.[47][48]

The first contention between the two positions primarily focuses upon the meaning of the Hebrew verb ידע (yada), translated as know in the King James Version:"
