The Great Debaters takes place in the social mist of the Great Depression during the 30's in Texas, where incivilities toward black people and violence amongst social classes were common. The Wiley college debate team is continued by a professor named Melvin B. Tolson and four students are retained to be teached how to argue for winning debates against other colleges.
The relation between the students are typically what is a triangle at first, with sexual tensions, personal stories and secret activities, melting with the difficulties of being a black team in a dark period of history. The principle is to practice rhetoric in order to defend ideas or premisses, by the affirmative or the negative. One is best at searching in books the fact relatives to the core idea, the other to speak with assurance and cunningly, and the only woman to be the one who gather the whole brainstorm (the fourth having feared the challenges he quit the debate race rather soon).
They circulate among the colleges in the country winning debates after debates, until the first white college... Then the roles balance themselves, the shy become the brave and the boaster let his brilliant place for his mate.
Unfortunately the role of a woman in this team is not enough put in evidence, the fact that they are black is largely more discussed.
The main theme of the debates is around the social mix and the rules made by society in relation with one's personal ethic. I don't think it's very pushed on that line, it's a drama after all. But there's some great ideas put inside that I let you discover and think about.
