After the recent discussion brought up the Hieronymous machine, I found myself immediately curious. With my present knowledge I can't contribute much to this topic but I thought there should be a thread for it. I've included quotes from the original discussion at the bottom of this post.

There are multiple incarnations of this device floating around the net. There is a new-agey trend that says you don't even have to build it, just draw the diagram on a piece of paper and it will work. But then you're not building a Hieronymous machine, you're building a dowsing tool or pendulum at most. Wow, I don't need to build it? I can just draw it? FREE LUNCH!!! The special thing about the Hieronymus machine is that it should be more reliable and reproducible than dowsing, at least for most people.
When asked why it works the C's responded "Transducer is crystalline in nature. Quartzine polymer collects ambient radiation through point of even balance."
I was wondering whether the "transducer" was the prism or the tactile plate. I can imagine "point of even balance" having to do with optical dispersion, or perhaps more appropriately, "eloptic dispersion".
Here is what was supposedly written by Hieronymus himself. there are several diagrams and charts:

The earliest form of the device I can find is the one in the patent. There are later incarnations with parts missing or added. I've found 2 other versions of the device. The first one seems to be closest to what Laura was reading about in the session with the C's. However it doesn't place a coil around the specimen. I wonder if the coil does anything or not? The second is supposedly one of his more modern versions not using a prism, and using more modern transistors instead of tubes. However due to the lack of the prism I wonder if it may be a crippled dysfunctional version, essentially devolving to a dowsing tool, in service to new-age lunacy.

Anyone who has built a crystal radio kit could build one of these. In the patent Hieronymus said that the RF amplifier was not really necessary, so it may be possible to construct a simplified version that works well enough for experimentation. If one can verify that it works, it could be very useful for any number of things. Judging food quality, heavy metal contamination, omega 3 content and so on.
Another thought I had was that perhaps one could use an AM radio directly as the RF amp and hook the output to the plate. A cheap crystal radio kit would be best for this purpose due to the simplicity and reproducibility. I see trouble concerning the determination of the amounts of elements. At RF it is not easy to build a reliable attenuator. A simple varistor will not do, and the attenuation will wander across the frequency range.
It also occurs to me that if this energy can be received, then it can probably be transmitted as well, and could work as a form of communication.

The C's in 1998 said:Q: (A) Now, I have here something from Australia. These
people are talking about many things including this
Kozyrev Time Machine. Also, they have something on what
they call 'The Amazing Hieronymous Machine.' (L reads)
"On 27th September, 1949 a very strange patent was granted, by
the United States Patent Office, to one Dr. Thomas
Hieronymous. It was for a device which was intended for
the detection and analysis of minerals, using a previously
undiscovered sensing method. The machine uses a sensing
detector made of a coil of wire, an optical prism which is
mounted on a rotating mechanism, a small electronic
amplifier, and an output device known as a 'tactile
sensor.' Sometime in early 1960 when I owned an
electronics design laboratory a regular client wandered in
with one of these devices. He had found instructions on
how to build one in a popular science fiction magazine,
and he wanted to see what I thought of it. Well, I can
tell you now, I didn't think of it. The whole thing was
ridiculous and was an insult to everything I had learned
about electronics. The only problem I had was... it
worked!! And it worked like this: the mineral sample was
placed in front of the pickup coil and the prism rotated
mechanically until a signal was detected at the output.
And this is where my belief system was strained to its
limit! The 'output' consisted of a flat coil of wire
placed beneath a piece of glass. I was told to rub my
finger lightly over the glass and tune the prism at the
same time. At a critical point in the tuning process the
contact between my finger and the glass suddenly felt
'tacky' as if someone had spilt orange juice on it. And
this was the basis for the patent, a new form of
detection... the Tactile Detector. All forms of detection
in measuring equipment prior to this had been by sight or
sound. That is, you could watch a voltmeter mover or you
could hear a changing audio tone. but this new device
worked by a 'change in feel/touch.' Since then this form
of detection has been widely adopted for use in general
'radionics' devices which are used by a number of
alternative medicine practitioners in Australia as a
means of determining health problems. I have seen one of
these machines demonstrated by a skilled operator and the
accuracy is better than 90%. If the dial of a Hieronymous
machine is calibrated to a certain mineral, any similar
mineral placed by the pickup coil will produce a
'response' at exactly the same portion of the dial. By
using advanced attenuating circuits the metallic ration in
alloys can be accurately determined. Nobody has a clue
how or why it works but then again, in the 19th century,
nobody had a clue how electricity or magnetic fields
worked, but plenty of people used these strange 'new'
effects to make money. [...] A well known rocket
engineer, Harry Stine, who was employed at the White Sands
missile range, New Mexico, built one of these machines and
tried it out on the other scientists and engineers on the
base. He found that 80% could get it to work and even Dr.
Clyde Tombaugh, the astronomer who discovered the planet
Pluto in 1930, found he could make the machine work
effectively. Stine was so dumbfounded with the
possibilities that he has since devoted a fair portion of
his life to investigating these and similar devices.' (A)
I would like to ask why this machine works?
A: Transducer is crystalline in nature. Quartzine polymer
collects ambient radiation through point of even balance.
