The Neurology of Awakening

Rick Hansen, a man who studies neurology and meditation, presents a discussion on the plasticity of the brain and how the mind can sculpt it. For instance, he speaks briefly about how cortisol from stress can shink the hippocampus resulting in the loss of contextual meaning. The video shows how EE is rewiring our brains through meditative practices and could be connected to recievership capability. The Neurology of Awakening can be viewed on youtube.

Hi ajseph 21,

It sounds interesting. It would be externally considerate to the rest of the forum members for you provide a link to the vid. I'd really like to see it! :)

edit: spelling

I'm sorry herondancer but I'm using a playstation for my internet use, I can't provide links to websites. Typing "The Neurology of Awakening" on youtube is all I can provide. My apologies. :(

I thought that the presentation made good points about neurology and psychology. However imo the title of the talk "neurology of awakening" is misleading as far as "awakening" is understood in a 4th Way Work context. Hansen talks about becoming aware of negative thought patterns (system2 narratives being driven by system1 wounds and experiences) through mindful attention. The negativity bias - which has its source in the imperative of bodily survival in evolutionary terms - is then fought by positive experiences. The recipe is

[quote author=Neurology of Awakening]

1) Look for positive facts and let them become positive experiences.

2) Savor the positive experience
- Sustain it for 10-20-30 seconds
- Feel it in your body and emotions
- Intensify it

3) Sense and intend that the positive experience is soaking into your brain and body, registering deeply in emotional memory

While such a method may bring some relief to people suffering from various kinds and levels of neurosis, it does not bring about (and most likely hinders) the type of transformation that is termed "awakening" in the 4th Way sense.

obyvatel that was the part that raised some questions for me as well. I enjoyed the talk for the most part because of the neurology and changes in mind/brain due to meditation. But the savoring of positive emotions did come across as new agey because what purpose is there but just to feel good? I'd say it's a step in the process of awakening but not the Way itself.
