The Force is Strong With This One
Hi People.
I want to talk about a few subjects interwined. Gurdjieff said know thyself, and self-study must be your aim. Then in the book "psychosynthesis" which really means wholeness, by the author Roberto Assagioli, he talks about similar things that Gurdjieff spoke of, in quite a clear way of describing. So what I'm going to do, is to show you what I mean through an excerpt from his book, and then delve into the dream world where we observe from different angles and we can then talk about why we observe in the different ways that we all do, in dreams. To comprehend that mystery.
On page 111 of this book, it says:
"We are dominated by everything with which our self is identified. We can dominate and control everything from which we dis-identify ourselves."
"The second meaning which can be given to "self-identification" is the inner experience of pure self-awareness, independently of any content or function of the ego in the sense of personality. Curiously, it is a subject which has been neglected, and the explanation is that the experience of pure self-identity - or in other words, of the self, the I-consciousness, devoid of any content - does not arise spontaneously but is the result of a definite inner experimentation. Those who have tried have been able to reach a state of pure I-consciousness, self-identity, realization of oneself as a living center of awareness. This is well known to psychologists in the East, because they are interested in the experience, value it, and therefore use the techniques appropriate to achieving it."
"The third meaning of "self-identification" is that of the realization of the higher or spiritual Self. This experience requires a further technique or techniques. It is different from the other experience of pure self already described - but it is not completely separate from it. As given in chapter one, there are not in reality two independent selves. There is one Self, but there are very different and distinct levels of self-realization. Therefore, between the self-identity of the ordinary or normal level of functioning and the full spiritual Self-realization, there are intermediate stages of levels, even wider, clearer, fuller. The first experience of the self - the personality self - as a point of pure self-consciousness, is extremely important. No one experiences it spontaneously, and this explains that strange phenomenon that many people are apt to deny the very essence of their being."
"The experience of the point of self-awareness on the personality level is the first step toward the experience of the Self, or in existential terms, the essence of Being. This problem of finding one's self, experiencing one's self, and from the center of oneself directing one's life, is a problem basic to our times where a great tendency towards conformity is present."
"Through introspection we acquire a more focussed and clear awareness of the mind-stream, ceaselessly flowing within ourselves. When we turn our ability to observe inwards, we realize that there is actually an inner world of phenomena, at least as manifold and varied as the outer world, and that through the development of observation it becomes more and more definite to the observer."
With that excerpt in mind I'm going to tell a dream I had which shows how many different ways of observing we have in our dreams.
I was in a dream where I could see the Earth was showing and then just outside of the Earth atmosphere, in space, there was a very large, light blue sphere right next to the earth, but invisible. The simple message in that part of the dream is that in real time, we cannot see this blue sphere, but in the dream world, I was looking at it.
What happened is that I flew towards that blue sphere, and when I got close to it I saw it was geometrically shaped. There were triangles all over it, and there was white electricity moving along the lines of the triangles here and there. It was very intense looking and beautiful too. Then suddenly I was at a distance looking at who I am, a strong personalitied female with a mission, and there was a man who came out of the sphere and they two were standing there suspended in mid-air, maybe on a platform. He, from what I sensed, was the captain of that blue sphere, and she was working with him.
They were talking together. I didn't know what they were saying. They were talking in a strange language. Like light had become sound, it was so complex. There were high pitched musical tones and beeps and things oh my, I could not comprehend any of it. But I strained to listen to them as best I could. And she noticed that I was trying to hear them, to understand what they were saying. And so, while she was talking with him she began moving me back to Earth, to my bed, where now I was laying in my bed and looking at them as they were finishing up their communications.
Then they stopped talking and she came in behind me, silent, and positioned herself behind my head, behind my body, and as she entered into me from the back, I sensed a smile from her because I had been trying to get into their world to hear what they were saying. Then complete silence. She had disappeared into me, and there was no more feeling of her presence. I was waking up, still in a dream state, remembering what they were saying, how it sounded, and the intensity of the communication, meaning that it was very important, and I was trying hard to comprehend it, to decifer what was said, but I couldn't for all I tried.
And so, what I mean to say is, I felt like a really dumb human when I was laying there. And quite confused, but I figured there was this higher side of me who couldn't allow me to know certain things, because I needed to perform in a human way on this planet, and what ever she was all about, well, all I could know from that was through observing her.
Assagioli said that our Self is one...not two separate parts. So. Let's try to figure that one out. I know that in the context of your dreams, you all have had similar experiences where you are observing yourself, and then you are in that being who you were observing, and then you are outside of that being and again observing that being.
That is what I would like to comprehend a lot more of. What are your thoughts?
