I read a review of this album last week, and it intrigues me enough to give y'all a heads up on this one, it could well be an atmospheric ambient beauty.

Apparently the project grew from a track recorded in support of Gary McKinnon, so all's well that ends well. From small STO acorns great trees can grow! I'm gonna order it but here's a link where some of the principal collaborators talk about the work.

I'm looking forward to this anyway. Also on the 2cd edition the second disc is a 3d60 version of the album, which allows you to listen to the music in a sort of 3d but without the need for sophisticated audio equipment.

It's gotta be worth ordering!!! :cool2: If anyone gets it let us all know what you think!

You just KNOW it's gonna be frickin' amazing. I can't wait to hear the 3d version on disc two! :cool2:

For anyone who might be curious about this, The Orb is a musical group credited with spawning the genre "ambient house".

As of this writing, Westwood Blvd in West Los Angeles (Little Persia) is probably teeming with traffic in preparation for the opening show.

Today marks the official release of Metallic Spheres the collaboration between Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour and ambient/house collective The Orb. The disc is intended to be heard in two parts with a “Metallic Side” and a “Spheres Side,” each of which contains five movements. Tonight the Orb will perform in Los Angeles at an event to celebrate Metallic Spheres.

An original laser show production will be part of the festivities in which the group will perform the album in full. David Gilmour will not appear at the show, which will take place at the Masonic Lodge at 2244 Westwood Boulevard.

Well......I have had this album for almost a week now and have listened to it at length on at least four of those. I resisted writing a first impressions post because I consider this to be something of a slowburner, which will undoubtedly reveal its subtle intricate patterns with time.

The combination of the ambient soundscapes of The Orb, who shot to international fame and made an indelible impression on me as a sixteen year old with their hit Little Fluffy Clouds, and the crystalline liquid smooth delivery of David Gilmour has made for a richly rewarding record which is suggestive rather than declamatory. Liitle noodles, sound jam collages, cheeky solo weaving and funky skits abound on here, and it's really great to hear these old pros have fun with an extended jam.

I would guess that this record emerged via editing out of an hours long selection of jams recorded. This is a tremendous way of recording albums, as any fan of Late sixties Miles Davis box sets can testify. I would love them to do the same with this! :cool2:

My only gripe with the record is that after playing some wickedly suggestive stuff, David G doesn't quite let rip with the kind of elan that we have heard from him in his finest moments, as on say Comfortably Numb or High Hopes. But that level of genius is rare even for geniuses..... ;) I'm gonna watch the film the Floyd put on in a Pompeii amphitheater later on, it's a classic! The funky groove section in Echoes, as recorded on this. You can almost hear the birth of intelligent electronica here. The Orb, Depeche Mode, 21st cent Radiohead, Black Dog, Orbital, Lamb, Aphex Twin, all owe the Floyd a debt, and all would happily admit it.

So it's great to see the wheel of influence turn a full circle. Now we need more of these!!!!! :P

Might I suggest Massive Attack featuring Jimmy Page? Or perhaps Photek featuring John McLaughlin of Mahavishnu Orchestra infamy (they were the maddest cosmic jazz rock band of all time. Mental time signature changes, outrageously quick soloing etc). Mouthwatering indeed....

The above is a link to the Pink Floyd film. An hour of genius it is...part one of echoes, so good and the cinematography is sublime. Might I suggest friends and some hand rolled woodbines for an evening of privelage. :cool2:
