THOUGHTS ON MODERN TECHNOLOGY....

I remember when computers where becoming popular for the home was the argument or statement that we would be conserving paper. Has owning a computer really cut down on the amount of paper I/you/we use? I used to go the store for cigarettes and diapers now, it's cigarettes and computer paper. Seven years ago my husband and I bought a home and the owners lived out of state. I was amazed that there wasn't a plan for this. Couldn't they/we just sign the Documents and wire them? Noooooo! We have to wait for the hard copy. Two years latter we bought another house. Same thing! Pretty sad considering your computer is out dated before you can get it out of the box.

Camera/Phones: How much better, On the spot, Up to the second, has news reporting been. With all these camera phones turning anyone with one into a Jr. Clark Kent we should know All the News that is the News Across the Nation the second it happens. What about Crime? With everyone only a phone call away it seems to me that this alone would cut down on crime. ADD the Camera to that and we've got your mug shot on the TV. Noooooo!

Cameras Everywhere: Well, It seems to me at least that someone should be working on the resolution problems. Every camera that actually gets a face shot can't quite make out who it is. Or it's bad lighting or the person was moving too fast or had a hoodie on....with glasses....at night. (((ONLY on CSI can the investigators get a blow-up of a reflection off a drop of water off the side of a Pepsi can to show a murder across the street, in the reflection of a car side mirror.at night and make a positive I.D.)))

Police chief wants surveillance cameras in Houston apartments

By PAM EASTON

HOUSTON — Houston’s police chief proposed Wednesday placing surveillance cameras in apartment complexes, downtown streets, shopping malls, and even private homes as a way of combating crime with a shortage of police officers.

I know a lot of people are concerned about Big Brother, but my response to that is if you are not doing anything wrong, why should you worry about it?” Houston Police Chief Harold Hurtt told reporters Wednesday at a regular briefing.

Houston is facing a severe police shortage because of too many retirements and too few recruits, and the city has absorbed 150,000 hurricane refugees who are filling apartment complexes in crime-ridden neighborhoods. City Council is considering a public safety tax to pay for more officers.

Hurtt said he believes building permits should require malls and large apartment complexes to install surveillance cameras. And Hurtt said if a homeowner requires repeated police response, he thinks it is reasonable to require camera surveillance of that property.

If they are putting a burden on the criminal justice system and cheating the other residents of Houston, yes,” he said. “I think people are upset when people are robbed and killed on the streets of Houston.”

Scott Henson, the director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Police Accountability Project in Texas, called Hurtt’s proposal to require surveillance cameras in building permits “radical and extreme.”

“I didn’t know that building permits included probable cause,” Henson said. “The Fourth Amendment says we have the right to be free from unreasonable searches, and I’m not sure why he thinks that they would be justified in putting people under surveillance without any reason.”

Hurtt said some apartment complexes in Houston have become crime “hot spots” and installing cameras would be less expensive than having officers stationed around the clock.

Houston Mayor Bill White said he hasn’t talked with Hurtt about his idea, but sees it as more of a “brainstorm” than a “decision.” ( BRAINSTORM ) LOL !

Reading 'The Tommyknockers' by Stephen King when I was eleven gave me an early wariness of technology in general. It does seem strange, these gadgets that are supposed to make our lives more convenient often seem to do the opposite or cause more stress in other areas of life. It makes you wonder about the purpose of all this technology and where it is ultimately taking us.
