Tobias (8) cycles 200 kilometers to his sweetheart: 'I hugged her right away'


BREDA - It's a romantic act, which many a man can take as an example. The 8-year-old Tobias Vliegenthart from Breda biked two hundred kilometers to his girlfriend Anouk (10) in the Achterhoek. "I cuddled her right away, I never want someone else."

The idea originated in early July. Tobias recently had started on track racing. Suddenly he mentioned he wanted to cycle to 'his Anouk' in the Gelderse Vorden. "I found that so sweet, I immediately bought a second-hand race bicycle," says mother Hilda Vliegenthart (49).

For weeks, the duo trained. "We found out that forty kilometers a day was really the max for Tobias." And so his mother divided the trip over five days, with various intermittent hotel nights. Last week Thursday they left off.

Tough kid
It was a tough journey, but the thoughts of his 'Anouk' kept Tobias going. "We cycled through heavy rain showers. The trip was long. Still, Tobias did not give a shriek," continues his mother. "He had a clear goal in his mind."

Last Monday they finally arrived in Vorden. "He wanted to sprint the last few meters, but that was not possible. It was a dangerous seashell lane," laughs mother. Tobias: "I immediately left my bike and hugged her."

The visit did not stay unnoticed. Anouk had signed out a finish line for Tobias drawn with curb-chalk. She also had a balloon for him, chips and cookies. On the pavement she drew a big heart, where Tobias immediately lay down in. The two will remain together all week. They go together to pony park Slagharen, will eat pancakes and do many more. "We are going to go swimming too," says Tobias.

Five years together
That's just how they know about each other. The young couple has been "totally in love for five years". They met in the pool. Tobias was then three and Anouk five years old. Whether he ever wants another? "No, just Anouk. I do not know why she's so much fun."

Every holiday Tobias goes to Grandma, who lives in the Achterhoek. That turns out to be a wise decision. And whether mother likes it? "I love to see them so happy."
