Thrill-seeking tourists of all ages brave West Bank shooting range to be taught by settlers how to shoot terrorists

Summer camp, warfare style: Like a frozen turkey plunged into boiling oil, a group of American tourists descend from an air-conditioned van into the scorching heat of the West Bank. Flashing smiles all around, they march into Caliber 3, a local shooting range.

"Move it!" the Israeli guide suddenly yells. "Destroy that terrorist," he orders them, and they charge, guns loaded, at cardboard targets.

Gush Etzion has become a hot destination in recent months for tourists seeking an Israeli experience like no other: The opportunity to pretend-shoot a terror operative. Residents of the nearby settlements, who run the site, offer day-trippers a chance to hear stories from the battleground, watch a simulated assassination of terrorists by guards, and fire weapons at the range.

The fact that the tourist attraction is located beyond the Green Line only intensifies the thrill for the visitors, who often appear disappointed when told by their guides that they are not in any danger.

'Mommy can't protect you'

Shay, a gray-haired guide with a throaty voice, demonstrates the best way to grab hold of an assailant, while shots sound in the nearby range. A variety of rifles and faux explosive belts lay on a desk in front of him, while the pictures of smiling "terrorist" targets line the walls.

"Grab me," he orders 19-year-old Michael, who finds himself on the ground within moments of touching his muscular instructor.

According to reports in the foreign media, Shay was one of the combat troops who took part in Operation Entebbe, the mission that rescued the passengers of a hijacked Air France flight in 1976. When the tourists hear about it, their eyes light up.

"Suppose that the terrorist in front of me has an automatic weapon," Shay tells the captivated audience. "He can spray a cartridge within 2.8 seconds, which means I have less than three seconds to take him down. And that is what I will do."

He turns around and lodges a bullet in each target, prompting loud cheers all around.

But the tourists don’t come out all the way to Gush Etzion for a lecture; they want to push the trigger as well.

Shay hands a dummy gun to the 14-year-old Brian, who excitedly blurts out, "Jesus!"

"Your mommy won't be here to protect you, so stand up like a man," Shay yells at the teen. "Are you ready to take out a terrorist?"

"Yes I am," Brian retorts.

One by one, the combatants-for-a-day don protective glasses and approach their Tavor or M16 rifles.

Five-year-old sniper

Michel Brown, 40, a Miami banker, chose to take his wife and three children to the range with the purpose of "teaching them values."

Upon entering the range, his five-year-old daughter, Tamara, bursts into tears. A half hour later, she is holding a gun and shooting clay bullets like a pro.

"This is part of their education," Michel says as he proudly watches his daughter. "They should know where they come from and also feel some action."

Sharon Gat, the range's manager, says all the instructors at the site have served in elite IDF units.

"This is a special program created due to popular demand," he says. "Travelers from all over the world come here to meet former combat troops and hear stories about elite units. It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience."

"We heard on the news about shootings in the West Bank," the mother, Olga, says. "We came to see it in person."

Her son, Jacob, 24, puts down his rifle and exclaims: "This is an awesome experience. I learned how to stop a terrorist and how to rescue hostages. Now, when I find myself in distress, I will know how to deal."

Davidi Pearl, who heads the Gush Etzion Regional Council, notes that this kind of experience turns the district into a world-famous "tourist gem."

At the end of the thrill-filled day, the tourists get a diploma indicating they "completed a basic shooting course in Israel."

"Boom, boom," the 13-year-old Riley mutters on the way out of the range.

"Boom, boom!" Jacob responds, knowingly.

I do not even know what to say.

This is the kind of information that makes me wonder, "why bother ?". Humanity has clearly chosed its path, and it wasn't the "right one" in order to assure its survival.

The why bother has come up for me many times, but I cannot condemn the mass of humanity nor can I condone their acquiescence, I understand their plight. I understand just how hard it is to choose and not be chosen for. I do not excuse their default cooperation with the dark ones, but I do understand it.

If there is any chance of the mass choosing otherwise, it will be as a result of a great shock which makes it clear to them, osit. It will be painful, but as we currently are, we learn through suffering, however just because we suffer does not mean that we will learn.

Now I understand why this planet has been referred to as a planet of sorrows, it is a somber walk through this life now. So this is what it is like to be even semi-conscious in this nightmare, huh. I can not even imagine what the earth is and has been going through for millenia, her children have become insane.

It's just more confirmation of how humanity has lost it's..........humanity. Not surprising when we consider how easily we believe that things such as the use of money, property rights, competition, a ruling class and 'enemies' are somehow natural when instead these things are cleverly crafted traps used to bend our minds and will against ourselves. Not surpising when dehumanising terms such as "terrorists" are used. It makes it easy to forget that "those terrorists" are really people with probably real grievances too.

I don't know if it's the 'right' reaction to have, but this article actually made me chuckle. I think it's just a means of self calming in the face of hypocrisy so deep that you could drown in it. Of course, 4 year old girls being trained to kill terrorists is just sickening, but I can't help but keep a sense of humor about it all, juxtaposed with the sadness that I feel. Now I understand the phrase "laugh or cry moment".

This is quite sickening for sure, and I don't know about humor, but let's not forget that a bunch of crazy people isn't the whole of humanity. Same story again: A few activists, some followers, and most people unaware or not caring, overloaded by their daily tasks and too much (bad) information. A weird path for humanity anyhow...

Ridiculous. how far these pathological go. In some states like NJ, there is controversial bear killing seasons , where people go and kill the animals.
With media in their pockets and with all the prostituted politicians are of the part of the Isralie mafia , they relegated the Palestinians as subhuman. Now they are going for the insane next step.

Yeah it is self calming, but it is not hypocrisy, it is a very malicious "evil," both conscious and unconscious. To see & compute the consequences of teaching children to feel, think and thus behave thusly, is horrifying to say the least but very, very saddening as well because they are children, they do not know; but yet those who are in a position of power in the relationship inoculate them with such soul killing poison, that I just can't describe the pain of the child that must take up the facade in order to "belong" just in order to survive.

"They" have truly made this a hell on earth, a place filled with the undead who do not know their estate.

This is very true, it seems I was not considering the true depth of the situation, and when you think of it on a cosmic scale it is absolutely horrible. We are all struggling to deprogram ourselves from what this world has done to us whilst growing up, but it is just getting worse and worse. The level of evil has increased greatly even in the past couple of decades, it makes one wonder if it will even ever be possible for these people to wake up in the face of such blatant and constant programming.

And therein is what elicits sadness from me. Just how "bad" does it have to get for the eyes of the masses to be opened even just a little bit for a while? How much more suffering will it take for them to choose? Just contemplating what humanity is collectively asking for sends shivers down my spine because they are asking for horror, pain and suffering on a whole other dimension relative to what has already been experienced. This is just astonishing to me, but all I can do is learn from others and the life I have lived up till this period.

I forgot about that momentarily.

Ignorance, tis such an inherency of this estate, the root of all our woes but also the root of all our lessons. I guess the only thing to do is "be the change we want to see," step by step, step by step.
