Treasury blocks the Queen's secret plea for more money

The Queen could face a cash crisis by 2011 but her secret pleas to the Government for extra money are being refused, it was claimed today.

Palace aides have told ministers the monarchy's finances have been eroded by inflation and more money is needed to pay for the royal family's official duties and the upkeep of its palaces.

But the credit crunch has ravaged the Government's budgets and it says it cannot provide extra funding.

As the dispute grows behind closed doors, royal officials are reminding ministers of their constitutional duty to protect the Queen's financial security.

They say Parliament must increase both the £15million it pays to maintain the Royal Estate, and the £7.9million for the Civil List, which pays for the senior royals' official functions.

Without a state bail-out, the Queen will be unable to balance her books within the next three years, an investigation by accountants Baker Tilly claims.

If the monarchy keeps spending at the current rate, by 2011 soaring prices will take the bill for maintaining the Royal Household to more than double the £7.9million allocated each year.

This year's Buckingham Palace accounts show Civil List expenditure will reach £14.4million.

Royal aides say there is already a £ 32million black hole in the accounts, with the cash needed to pay for a backlog of repairs. The Treasury will only say that an announcement on the Civil List will be made 'in due course'. A Palace source said: 'I am not convinced [ministers] are listening very carefully to our arguments. It is a major disappointment.'

LONDON (AFP) — Queen Elizabeth II has another reason to be cheerful as she celebrates her 80th birthday -- her personal fortune has reportedly risen by 30 million pounds (43 million euros) in a single year.

Figures published by the Sunday Times newspaper on Friday showed that the increase, which takes the queen's fortune to an estimated 300 million pounds (434 million euros), is down to the stock market recovery and the sharp rise in the value of property.

Nonetheless, the queen is only ranked 192nd in the list of richest Britons published annually by the Sunday Times.

According to this source the Queen's (personal?) fortune was "only" 300 million pounds back in 2006..! Think of it -that is not much, is it?... I mean, I always carry a few millions in my pocket just to go for a coffee break for god's shake! She IS really one of us after all!

And I suppose -as all worried and insecure 3rd age citizens- she must have stashed a few extra millions and some crown jewels under her pillow for a "bad moment" (she is 82 after all).
But do i understand that the expenses of the palace are rising. Let's be externally considerate this time and just think of your own palace: Isn't it becoming hard to get along? With all these rooms, sections and wings central heating is ever more costly and the price of royal grade shrimps per ton has sky-rocketed -just to name a few everyday problems...

How can anyone not sympathize with her? She is just a senior citizen on a very tight budget, like any other real person, since she pleads for help from the goverment like any other commoner would...
Poor old lady..! Where is this world heading??? :P

Time to turn these welfare cheats (for that is what they are) and their "welfare queen" out on the streets where they belong.

one time... one time you tell a guy you think royals' eyes look like snake eyes and he makes a career out of it! :-[ blasting love 'n light wasn't my idea though... i swear!

well it certainly explains why she and her folk need more money. She must surely be in the know and very concerned about a possible burgeoning ice age. She must have done the number and realised that the heating bill to keep her many palaces and residences warm enough for a bunch of "reptiles" through the cold English winter would be astronomical!

It is also essential for their "digestion" :scared:
