'United Kingdom' explained

Wow! That video really did explain everything. It explained a lot to an American like me. I knew that Uk was broken up into 3 countries, but didn't know about Ireland. Now I need go back and watch it a few more times. The narrator talked really fast but did a great job of explaining the whole kit and caboodle of the UK/Great Britain thing in a nut shell. I think the subject can initially be a little confusing, especially to foreigners. Well worth the watch. Thanks parallel.

One error. It is not universally accepted that Ireland and the UK together are referred to as 'the British Isles'.

Very informative. I always was a little confused about all that. I don't remember ever going into such detail in history or geography classes in school. Thanks for posting. :)

Amazing, eh? The 'world's oldest democracy' is officially a chartered corporation furthering the aims of 'God'.

I think we can see where the U.S. got some of its 'Manifest Destiny' sick puppy-ness from.

Regarding the distinction between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, and someone calling themselves 'Irish' meaning they are from the 'Republic of Ireland' and not 'Northern Ireland'...

The video’s creator probably thought himself painting an objective, neutral viewpoint, but he has actually summarized the narrative created by the ‘establishment gentlemen historians’.

This picture of the UK describes the idea of the United Kingdom that the Crown Corporation would like its subjects and the world to believe, but as far as Ireland (the whole island) being “a geographical and not political term” goes, it’s just that – an idea. The border between ‘Northern Ireland’ and the ‘Republic of Ireland’ is a recently-drawn imaginary line, one drawn for the express purpose of creating exactly the kind of chaos that followed.

Many in Ireland, in both 'the Republic' and 'Northern' Ireland, view the island as one entity and one polity. We're not waiting around for permission from either the UK or Dublin governments. The last line in the address on any mail I send there simply states 'Ireland'.

Ideology is what keeps those who identify with the Loyalist, Protestant tribal mentality in the north of Ireland from ditching this idea, not geography, genetics and culture. That ideology, as far as I can see, runs counter to nature and breeds the worst in people. It is continually fed to them by the psychopaths in power who govern centrally on behalf of the Crown (that is ordained by the psychopathic Biblical 'God') from Westminster/Whitehall in London. English, Scots, Welsh and Irish, we're all a mix of Celtic, Norman, Saxon blood (and probably much else besides!)... but this cancerous, unnatural, foreign concentration of Crown psychopaths, who are not even human to begin with, continue turning one against the other, as they have done for hundreds of years.

Anyone who may have the lingering idea of Britain's 'greatness' and good works on the world stage should read Web of Deceit by Mark Curtis. Any such illusions will be dispelled forever. I read this book nearly ten years ago, and as a resident of the UK I found it extremely difficult going. The genocidal activities of the UK government beggar belief. All my sacred cows were summarily slaughtered in no uncertain terms. This is a very important book for anyone who might still think well of the UK government and the crown. I highly recommend it.

From the back cover blurb:

[ . . . ] Mark Curtis reveals a new picture of Britain's role in the world since 1945 and in the 'war against terrorism' by offering a comprehensive critique of the Blair government's foreign policy. Curtis argues that Britain is an 'outlaw state', often a violator of international law and ally of many repressive regimes. He reasons not only that Britain's foreign policies are generally unethical but that they are also making the world more dangerous and unequal.

[ . . . ]

Drawing on formerly secret government files, [Web of Deceit] also shows British complicity in the slaughter of a million people in Indonesia in 1965; the depopulation of the island of Diego Garcia; the overthrow of governments in Iran and British Guiana; repressive colonial policies in Kenya, Malaya and Oman, and much more.

Thanks parallel, I was confused too, mostly regarding Wales (I always thought, the prince just lives there, not that being a some sort of country -with its many variables. And with North Ireland, with its never ending religious catholic/protestant war, but was not with the idea as being separated from Ireland.)

From what I understand, shillings and pennies are not longer used nowadays. Good. The likes to do it complicated. (Being in elementary school I took English classes (British English -it has it differences from the American though- at the Anglo _http://anglo.mx/)

Thank you very much Kniall. I wonder if among the mix of blood that you describe also including the Basque...One of the books I want to read soon is Stephen Oppenheimer's "The Origins of the British". I hope that help me clear, even a little, that doubt.
Thanks parallel for sharing the video.
