Russia disappointed by U.S. vote against resolution condemning glorification of Nazism

Russia is disappointed that the United States voted against a draft resolution condemning the glorification of Nazism, and a number of states, including all members of the European Union, abstained from voting on the draft, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.

Russia introduced to the UN a resolution condemning the glorification of Nazism and the desecration of World War II monuments in November.

"It is extremely puzzling and regrettable that the United States voted against the resolution, supported by an overwhelming majority of UN member states, and that several other countries, including all the European Union members abstained from voting on the draft," the ministry said in a statement.

The resolution condemns the construction of memorials in honor of former Nazis and Waffen-SS soldiers and the holding of public pro-Nazi demonstrations. It also includes recommendations to prevent the proliferation of neo-Nazi ideas on the Internet.

Russia has been introducing similar resolutions to the UN since 2005. Every year, the resolutions are supported by an increasing number of countries. Last year 124 countries voted in favor of the resolution, while 55 delegations abstained. The United States was the only nation to vote against it.

Parades in honor of Waffen-SS veterans, involving veterans from the Latvian Legion and the 20th Estonian SS Division and their supporters, are held annually in Latvia and Estonia. Russia has repeatedly criticized the Baltic States for allowing these parades to take place.

In April 2007, a Soviet war memorial was dismantled in the Estonian capital of Tallinn just before the May 9Victory Day celebrations in Russia. The move led to street protests in which over 1,000 people were arrested and one Russian national was killed.

Sounds like the U.S. and the E.U. might be camouflaging their support for Nazism with the guise of protecting "freedom of assembly". That issue sounds like it could get as tangled as the gordian knot entwining Julian Assange and "freedom of speech".

I've tried to find the text of the draft but I failed. If someone is at ease with the UN search engine...

While searching more informations, I come across this thread with photos of nazi supporters in Moscow

US Votes Against UN Resolution to Condemn Nazism
New York City : NY : USA | Dec 22, 2010

In a move that has the political pundits puzzled, the US voted in the UN against a resolution to condemn the glorification of Nazism and the Waffen-SS soldiers. The US representative voted against the resolution which Russia has presented each year since 2005. Last year, the US voted against it as well. Today the members of the European Union abstained from voting on the resolution.

In a rare show of unity both the Israeli and Iranian representatives voted for the resolution.

The resolution presented by the Russian delegation has become more urgent as many countries are veering to the right in political terms. Latvia has removed WWII war memorials and one was blown up in Georgia. Neo-Nazi groups have become bolder and the Baltic States of Latvia and Estonia hold annual parades honouring SS veterans.

The propaganda endorsed by the Baltic States and Ukraine are painting a picture of the Nazis as a group that was trying to save them from the Soviet rule. The reality of course, was the most brutal repression of people in modern history. Millions of people were slaughtered at the hands of these fascists. The SS ultimate commander was Heinrich HimmlerHeinrich Himmler.

Neo Nazi sentiment and membership has been rising as the true horror of Adolf HitlerAdolf Hitler's dream has faded. In N. America the largest hate group is the National Socialist Movement, based in Minneapolis. This hate group targets any that they consider non-white, Jewish or homosexual. They would deny citizenship to any people in their target groups. For the US representative to vote against the UN resolution condemning the Nazis and their misbegotten spawn is puzzling indeed.

The question is if the US is at all able to oppose Nazism. If one is to believe this very long list then the embassy in Lithuania is very capable of supporting Nazi ideology: http://defendinghistory.com/usa

And if the US has done the same in Latvia then the following makes sense too:

UNESCO Holocaust exhibition nixed following Latvian protests
January 21, 2015 12:09pm

(JTA) — Latvian officials prevented the opening of an exhibition about the Holocaust that Russia wanted to host at a United Nations building.

The exposition, titled “Stolen childhood: Holocaust victims Seen by Child Inmates of Salaspils Nazi Concentration Camp,” was canceled following objections by Latvian officials to its scheduled opening on Sunday at the Paris seat of UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, a UNESCO spokesman told JTA on Wednesday.

The exposition’s curator, historian Alexander Dioukov, told RIA Novosti that Latvia’s chief delegate to UNESCO, Sanita Pavluta-Deslandes, said the exposition risked damaging her country’s image during its presidency of the European Union, which the Baltic country assumed on Jan. 1 and will hold until July. 1.

Dioukov, who heads the Historical Memory association, said the exposition was co-sponsored by the UNESCO missions of Russia and Belarus.

UNESCO policy gives member states veto powers over events organized by other member states, a UNESCO spokesman told JTA.

“It wasn’t UNESCO’s decision to cancel, it was simply protocol,” spokesman Roni Amelan said. “Latvia opposed an exhibition by the Russian Federation that included photos from a concentration camp in Latvia.”

In an unsigned email to JTA, Latvia’s delegation to UNESCO said it offered to its Russian counterpart “to cooperate in order to organize in the future the event devoted to Holocaust remembrance, including by showing the film ‘The Controversial History’ about Latvia’s inhabitants, Holocaust survivors, Salaspils concentration camp survivors [and] Soviet deportation survivors.”

The email author did not answer JTA’s question as to why Latvia opposed the “Stolen childhood” exhibition.

Speaking to the LETA news agency on Wednesday, Karlis Eihenbaums, a spokesman for the Latvian Foreign Ministry, confirmed Riga’s opposition to the exhibition, adding that Dioukov “expressed openly hostile and unfriendly statements about Latvia and its people.”

Long burdened by bitter memories of Russia’s occupation of Latvia and Latvian complicity in Nazi war crimes during World War II, the two countries have had a tense relationship. Latvian leaders often have accused Moscow of expansionism and equated Nazism to communism despite protests by the Simon Wiesenthal Center and other Jewish groups.

In turn, Moscow hit back at what it called government support for the popular glorification of Nazi Latvians, including some who murdered Jews.
