Using your Wireless AP as "community cells"?

The Living Force
Since there is talk about shutting down the Internet, does anyone
have any idea how one might be able to use their Wireless AP
(Access Point base station) as a "community cell", as a possible
alternative to Internet connections?

The logistics needs overlapping cells in order to cover wide geographical
areas? For example, local, state, national, and global area coverage?

Clearly, this involves cooperation with others in sharing and becoming
members of the community; the AP access perhaps needs to be placed
carefully in physical location (so as to be as far away from human exposure
as possible [> 4 meters]) and protected by a firewall.

Perhaps this is not needed, but then again, there is that looming threat of
disconnecting the Internet...

FWIW,
Dan

There's always the tried and true...shortwave, citizen's band, smoke signals, pigeons, hand-printed underground newspapers, graffiti, dark alleys, campfires...

Except standard star-shaped topology, ther is something called mesh.
Here is link to wiki -> __http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesh_networking

It will be rather difficult to set it up off hand , a lot of configuration requirements. Also software has to support it.

Anyway , I was very briefly reading heading of an article and if I remember corectly , inet 'kill switch' is about turning off DNS.
I doubt that they will be ever able to turn off whole network. There will always be someone who will keep it up and running.
Network guys , hackers , crackers, geeks and so on, will go crazy if such thing happened :D
So kill switch will only affect dns-names resolving and we will be still able to access forum via this link --> http://66.33.196.106/forum/
Just remember to write down an IP address :D

Drygol, thanks for the link information on mesh
networking! Fascinating!

Yes, I realized it would be a logistical nightmare, as you
have explained it well.

Well, I guess we will have to rely on the Internet structure,
perhaps sans the root nameservers should it be disabled...
I guess it was DARPA designed in this way for a reason...

Yup! :D

I wanted to mention that in reading the documentation, it is interesting that
they mentioned "The Wizard of OS" group, and also, some of the network
topology diagram snapshots displays the various AP in yellow, along with
their "rabbit ears"

A funny speculation on my part is, that the "S" in "OS" is beginning to sound
more like a "Z" and the "rabbit ears" is beginning to relate to "how deep is
the rabbit hole?"... seems uncannily funny, me thinks! :D

Thanks for pointing out that link!

I think maybe the point is being missed here. If the Internet is "turned off", then even if a bunch of APs are set up to be a community cell, there may well not be access to the internet proper. Of course it all depends on how they turn it off. If they heavy the major ISPs, then there will be no access to the internet as your ASP is the point here you are plugged into the internet. For those of us who are live outside the US, all they need to do is cut access to the international cable network and bingo, we have no access to the wider internet and any and all the content which is US based.

The best way to link transatlantic mesh potatoes should the cable be cut is still up in the air, but we've "surfed" our way on before...we can do it again :)

With or without the Internet, the AP mesh Intranet community
could still continue, unless wireless signals are being jammed
and over a wide area or the AP community is unable to bridge
the land divide. Well, at least in theory, I think.
