The book is a work of art, the film too. We who love Russia, how can we not love this film which makes us see it under all its facets: by art, by its history, by its soul. This film is a marvel, the book too. Everything is there, in this history of the Russian people, in the past as in the present. And the most important questions: war, love, marriage, God, beauty, ugliness. Everything is there.

Here is the first part of the book version, by someone who understood the book.

I once read a review of Tolstoy's War and Peace by a specialist of the writer. He said that after having read the book 15 times, it was on the 16th that he began to understand the book, to live it, to hear it. I think the same could be said about this film. One time is not enough, nor two nor ten.

The times we live in are very hard for art and beauty. Soon it will all disappear. It is so important to look at works of art that help us to survive this nightmare in which we are caught. It is important for our survival as humans. Furthermore, it is important to answer the questions that the film asks, like the questions that the book asked.

Here is the first part of the film.

Thanks Loreta,

I will be adding it to my watch later list... that book has also been on my pending list for a while, maybe this will inspire me to give it a shot.

I read War and Peace 5 - 6 years ago, I liked it very much and every time someone mentions this book I am reminded of one passage that has stuck in my mind:

"... Sometimes he remembered how he had heard that soldiers in war when entrenched under the enemy's fire, if they have nothing to do, try hard to find some occupation the more easily to bear the danger. To Pierre all men seemed like those soldiers, seeking refuge from life: some in ambition, some in cards, some in framing laws, some in women, some in toys, some in horses, some in politics, some in sport, some in wine, and some in governmental affairs. "Nothing is trivial, and nothing is important, it's all the same- only to save oneself from it as best one can," thought Pierre. "Only not to see it, that dreadful it!"
