Weather in the SouthWest USA

I live in Phoenix AZ and have lived here for >20 years.

This year's weather seems somehow different to me.

June is what I call the "hot dry". It is consistently (in my experience for 20 years) in the high hundred and teens for an extended period and EXTREMELY low humidity. (The first time I saw the humidity on the TV news here I though it had to be a typo. 3% is not unheard of, a typical June day is 5-7%.) However this June has been relatively mild (if you consider 108 "mild"). Sure we have had a couple of hot days but in general it has been cool - for Phoenix in June, that is. Of course the big story weather wise here is the unprecedented drought that stretches from California to Oklahoma. Today's high is forecast for 102.

One of the local Arizona jokes is "a real Phoenician doesn't complain about the heat unless its over 105". So 102 is a balmy day.

I am making this posting because it "just feels different". It should be interesting what the monsoon brings - rain or just a massive wall of dust. (The dust storms we get here are simply apocalyptic. A few years back we had one that was a mile high and 100 miles long. It turned day into the blackest night.

I *do* wish it would rain.
