What is this tongue-tie-release surgery on babies?

I had never heard of this. Seems dubious. Anyone know anything about it and why it's exploding in popularity?

More babies getting their tongues clipped to help breastfeed. But is it necessary?

The article actually asks the question, "Is it necessary for most babies," which strikes me as maybe the stupidest question I've seen this year.

I did this with my baby when he was around 6 weeks. His tongue was too short and he didn’t get enough milk, I had to breastfeed ALL the time. After the procedure he was able to eat much better and slept better also. It’s funny you bring this up because it has been on my mind a lot lately (he is soon 3). I have been feeling some regret about the whole thing, like it was something I did without knowing the consequences. He has a diamond-shaped cut in the ”string” underneath the tongue.
I had no idea it was getting so popular..
