What kids are watching on Youtube

I don't spend any time searching through youtube to see whats out there so this came as a concerning surprise. My 6 yr. old grandson, along with his cousins and friends are interested in these optical illusion videos right now. I discovered this when he visited recently and was intently watching a video so I checked it out. The narrator advised staring at the illusion for a period of time and this would give the affect of different drugs, one was marijuana and another opiods, I believe. So, I stopped that and we had a discussion about the harmful affects of drug use :(.

I searched for that particular video to give as an example here, couldn't find it again but here is a similar one, "Optical Illusions that make you feel high" https://youtu.be/g1Z3qmfounM . Marijuana has been legalized here for recreational use and is becoming normalized, so young children are becoming aware of that.

During my search I discovered a enormous amount of optical illusion videos for self hypnosis on various subjects. One site by "UltraHypnosis" gives a long list of creepy titles such as, Slave Hypnosis: Master's Toy ( he does give this disclaimer, If you are under 18 you should never video yourself watching a hypnosis video or respond to people requesting that you do so. These dont look like something young children would view so I'm getting off subject a bit. So, some creepy, potentially hazardous material to watch out for.

There is an app called YouTube kids and it is supposed to be made to select videos just for kids, but there you can find videos like this one:

With the title of the video it isn't necessary to say more. And there are more similar videos on YouTube "kids". It is done with the idea to let the kid watching videos without you having to select them all the time, but if you let your kid watching those videos, what can she/he learn from it? The best thing would be if the kid doesn't learn nothing at all.

And speaking of YouTube in general it seems that now videos with kids are very popular, so you have a bunch of channels with kids doing the whole video. For example there is a channel with millions of views (some videos more than 15M views) and it only have 2M subscribers, it is called "Freak Family Vlogs" but... Watch it yourself and make your own conclusions, what kind of Vlogs are those???

Anyways you never know who is behind the screen, who is watching your videos, and how his mind works, I am sure there are a lot of pedophiles watching those videos...

As a conclusions I think the best thing to do would be if you ever let your child navigating on YouTube, take care of what your kid is watching and don't let an app do all the work.

Yes all media (TV, internet, video) that children watching should be in a common area or other observable location so responsible caretakers can monitor and stop inappropriate stuff.

No one should think that youtube or any other media is safe for children to explore of their own without supervision.
