No-one in their right mind believes in ghosts. You only have to look at the type of people who appear on Living TV's Most Haunted show to realise that the world of the paranormal is inhabited by crackpots, conspiracy theorists and irritating scouse mediums.

Will Storr, one of the country's top young investigative journalists, didn't believe in ghosts either.

But always one to take up a challenge, he agreed to be sent on an assignment to follow Lou Gentile, a demonologist from Philadelphia, for a men's magazine feature.

What Storr envisaged as a chance to poke fun at the whole supernatural sub-culture, however, soon turned into a terrifying nightmare - and a life-changing experience.

Absolutely gob-smacked by what he sees at first-hand on the Philadelphia trip, Storr decides he is going to unravel, once and for all, the truth about ghosts and supernatural phenomenon in general. And his findings are nothing short of sensational.

Written with a huge injection of humour, Storr's book is an absolutely essential read for anyone even vaguely interested in this subject matter.

His research brings him into contact with, amongst a cast of thousands, professional paranormal investigators, trance mediums, a sceptical monsterologist and a pair of black magic vigilantes from Worthing.

And while most of the above is written about as the hokum it really is, Storr gathers enough evidence from his travels to give even the most hardcore sceptic pause for thought.

Particularly chilling is his retrospective investigation into the world-renowned Enfield poltergeist case of the late 1970s and the night he attempts to spend in Britain's most haunted bedroom, which happens to be in a privately-owned house whose owner shuns publicity.

And for those who do happen to watch Most Haunted, the chapter on the antics of Yvette Fielding and Derek 'footballer-turned-medium' Acorah is truly hilarious and insightful.

This is a wonderful read that deserves to put Storr up there with the likes of Louis Theroux and Jon Ronson. Thoroughly recommended.
