With Alzheimer’s, continuing to keep the mind active slows deterioration
by M.T. Whitney

(NewsTarget) Keeping your mind active can help delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease, a study from the University of California Irvine shows.

The study involved mice bred to develop the plaque and other characteristics of Alzheimer’s. One set of mice was trained to swim to a specific location in a water tank, whereas the other set was allowed to swim in the tank freely.

Both sets of mice were tested at two, six, nine, 12, 15 and 18 months of age. The researchers found that the mice that went through training had less plaque for the first 12 months, but by month 15 their minds had deteriorated to an equal level as the untrained mice.

The study showed that learning new things in old age helped delay the appearance of lesions in the brain that signal the start of Alzheimer’s. The process that leads to Alzheimer’s is a buildup of the protein beta amyloid to create an equivalent to plaque in the brain. This plaque disrupts communication between cells and leads to Alzheimer’s.Doing simple, pleasurable things like crossword puzzles, building or reading, helps fight the numbing of the mind.

“We were surprised this mild learning had such big effects at reducing Alzheimer's disease pathology and cognitive decline, but the effects were not strong enough to overcome later and more severe pathology, UC-Irvine postdoctoral researcher Kim Green said in a university press release. “We are now investigating if more frequent and vigorous learning will have bigger and longer benefits to Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer’s affects an estimated 4.5 million adults in the United States and is the third-leading cause of death among Americans. The number of Americans with Alzheimer’s has doubled since 1980 and they are expected to grow past 4.5 million with the aging of the baby boomer generation.

The study appears in the January 24 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience.

I think Laura had talked about an experiment on a nuns group : those who were only satisfied with praying and living their faith got more
troubles with Alzheimer than those who went on studying. In fact , their brain seemed also to have some characteristics of the disease but they didn't feel the effects. I remember well ?

Hi Everybody,

I just listened to episode 2 of Awakening from Alzheimer show _info@awakeningfromalzheimers.com,
and found the information very revealing, as it was about natural and effective supplements you can find even over the counter, and which are very effective in treating Alzheimer patients in various stages of cognitive impairment and physical breakdown.

It is only available for one day, so here you are:

It is full with good information about various herbal formulas, best suppliers and their effects. Includes two presentations with dr Richard Brown and his wife dr Patricia Gerbarg

Hope it will help somebody!

There is more to come, so if someone would like to benefit from this series, you can register for the interviews here: _http://event.awakeningfromalzheimers.com/trailer-2c/

I came too late, the show is not available anymore (though it will be rebroadcast on the 6-8th October). However, for anyone interested, in the comments section, someone gave the list of supplements recommended during the show:

1. Centrophenoxine take for alzheimer’s. It pulls out the garbage from the cells in the brain. Clears toxins in the brain. –Start with this and Bio-strath to see improvement before implementing other stuff. Maybe Sam-e and B vitamins and NAC next.

2. Bio-strath is a Swiss herbal tonic. - may be most important. - polyphenals improve functioning of brain cells. Yeast and mushrooms. Very good for immune system too. -Start with this and Centrophenoxine to see improvement before everything else.

3. Selegiline - only prescribed. It is an MAO inhibitor. Approved here in US for Parkinsons.

4. Vinpocetine - 5 to 10 mg 2 to 3 times a day to help blood vessels in brain. Slightly modified extract from a plant. Neuroprotective and antioxidents. From Hungary

5. Best ginko is Ginkgold from Natures Way. Scientific name is EGB 761.

6. SAM-e (S-adenosylmethionine) in a low dose (400 mg) combined with B vitamins and acetyl l- carnitine (500 mg) and n-acetyl cystine (NAC) (600 mg) (crucial antioxidant). - nerve cell membranes begin to rejuvenate.

7. Nootropics:

1) piracetam
2) aniracetam
3)oxiracetam

-help with longer term memory (memory that is more than just immediate)
-activate reading, writing, speaking areas of brain
-improve energy cycle of a nerve cell
- no side effects
-help brain process problems
-Get these from Europe, NOT China because they will be pure from Europe and imitation and cheap if get from China.

8. Saffron for advanced alzheimer’s for agitation. Optimize Saffron by Life Extension is good brand. – Reduces carb cravings and reducing carbs helps brain health. It pulls amyloid out of the brain and amyloid is one of the most important proteins that causes Alzheimer’s. 1 pill with breakfast, 1 pill with dinner.

9. Picamilon

10. Sage improves attention.

11. Prevagen – extract of jellyfish. For aging issues, not for dementia or alzheimer’s. Soaks up excess calcium. Improves verbal learning. Does not seem to have side effects. -This needs more study.

Caution should be exercises with Piracetam- apparently for some people it can have opposite effect, here is well balanced review
