West Virginia, the state I grew up in, experienced a terrible flood last month. My husband and I had just been there for the funeral of my first cousin's wife who died suddenly from heart attack - she was 79. It is not an exaggeration to say that she made the Energizer bunny look like a slacker - a dynamic dynamo w/ a tremendous living faith that she demonstrated in every aspect of her life. After the viewing, extended family members had gone to a restaurant at Mink Shoals just off I-79 near Elkview & Clendenin. One of my first cousins now lives in Elkview. We had overshot the restaurant (one that my late father especially liked for their barbequed ribs) and so had to turn around. We drove down off Rt 119 and thru a neighborhood that had Elk River as its border in the distance. I imagine that entire residential area was wiped out. Upon learning of the flood, I emailed my cousin knowing she lived in one of the hardest hit areas. I finally heard back from her yesterday:
She is a 65 yr old widow having lost her husband last year to cancer - no children. According to this video, WV experienced a 1000 year flood w/ 10 inches of rain in one hour:
My only consolation from this natural disaster and all the others occuring nationally and globally is in the knowing that this is what it is going to take to stop the consortium from unleashing WW III and all their other nefarious plans for humanity.
I am finally back in my home. To my knowledge, none of our cousins got flooded. Clendenin is just a memory now. My house was spared, but the underneath was not. I have to replace duct work, insulation, air conditioner compressor, etc. Yet, I feel fortunate. I can live here. My next door neighbor and friend lost EVERYTHING. FEMA has denied her any assistance. She was renting the house, is a single parent with a 11-year old daughter, a minimum wage job and no car. They won't even give her money for a motel room. She'll be living with me until we can figure out something for her.
I'm so shell-shocked and heart-broken that I find it hard to talk right now. I imagine I will have to put this event into words someday, but not now. This is just simply hell on earth.
