I heard a possible reason why Roberts did this. The swearing in of the new POTUS is traditionally done precisely at 12 noon. Roberts wanted to be exactly on time and he thought things where moving to slowly. Trump was sworn in at 12:01, waiting for Melania would have made him even later. It's funny how this exact time is so important, more so then the Bible apparently. The Bible isn't a constitutional necessity for swearing in.

Now this can be used for another social uproar.

It's all relative I suppose. Gaius Julius Caesar killed a lot of people, 2000 years later he's a hero and he still has the power to give some women the tingles. His actions are accepted by many.
