The Living Force
Indeed. Since the US is unlikely to win a full-scale long war against Iran, what would a "pretend victory" against Iran look like?Joe pointed out some time ago that the US etc relies on the illusion of projected power around the world.
Regime change from within was obviously Plan A, but Iranians seem to be actually uniting instead of toppling their government.
Taking out the Ayatollah seems to be Plan B and it also seems unlikely to succeed. If Israel has more 'assets' in the Iranian leadership, they would have probably used them to kill the Ayatollah by now. Some think that the US will try to kill him with their bunker buster bombs - if that works, it could be a "pretend victory", but seems unlikely to happen either.
Maybe trying to use separatist groups within Iran is the main plan. There are Azeris (12 million, more than in Azerbaijan), Kurds, Baluchistanis, etc. A Kurdish separatist group called for attacks against government targets shortly after the Israeli attack. How successful these separatists can be is very unclear.
Maybe simply destroying Iran's oil economy and other infrastructure (especially nuclear power) could be sold as a "pretend victory" by the US after a short and intensive bombing campaign. Though that depends on the US military itself not suffering heavy losses.
