Believe it or not but I have been doing the squatting for many years now ever since somebody told me about it and it made a lot of sense to me (around 10 years). From then on I never did it otherwise.
Firstly, I don’t have any problems either strength or knee wise in doing so now and could sit like that for a long time. It wasn’t quite that easy at the begging though but you start to get better at it.
I think it has many advantages over the “western“ “lazy“ style of sitting. And by the way, the majority of the world population (mostly outside of the west) is doing it like that and IMO for good reasons.
Besides the mentioned benefits for a more natural/complete way in which you can let things happen in that way there is a point that doesn’t get mentioned all that often but is pretty important/good IMO too:
It can be a much more hygienic and efficient way to clean things up, IF you follow certain techniques such as NOT rubbing with the toilet paper (and thus actually distributing the stuff over a wider area outside, instead of getting rid of it) but instead always cupping and dab inwards towards the source of the mess. And look at the toilet paper after each cubbing/dab until you see pretty much nothing on the paper anymore. Not only do you use far less paper in that way but you also can leave things outwardly pretty (if not “completely“) clean if you push a little at the last cupping/cleaning phases and thus also clean just a little inside. Also what makes things a lot easier there is to NOT clean things by going with your cleaning hand behind your back but instead from the front between your legs!
I highly recommend it for everyone even those who might find it hard at the beginning! Sure, I think in some cases it can’t be done for various reasons, but for those who can at least try it, I would recommend doing it at least for a while.
Edit: Here is how the technique looks from the side:
And here from the front:
Notice how easily and freely you can clean/access the cleaning area from the front between your legs instead of from behind your back.
