Recently Eric Whitacre was on TED to talk about his Virtual Choir concept, and I found it to be deeply moving and hopeful:

The idea is that he first posts some videos with instructions and conducting of a piece, and then people all around the world record their individual voices. They are then put together into a single video and uploaded to YouTube.
The result of Virtual Choir 2.0, with the piece "Sleep", was just released. It includes 2052 voices from all over the planet. You can see it in full here:
