1929 Fashion

Some friends of ours are remodeling their approx 100 year house and they came across a newspaper from Oct 16 1929 (eight days before the stock market crash) wadded up behind the original bathtub.

The following is from a short article on fashion in that paper.

Next Summer's Styles

The arbiters of men's fashions seem to have devised a number of radical innovations for the male's garb next summer.

It is written, we hear, that a new kind of pants is to make its appearance; a gaudy, Sybaritic affair, somewhat like a pair of basketball trunks, cut off six inches above the knee, which will leave a lengthy bit of leg exposed to the fresh air, the August sun and the curious public gaze.

This, they say, will be much cooler and more comfortable than the present trousers. Very likely that is true. Yet we shudder at the idea, somehow.

For, if the horrid truth must be told, the average male knee is not pretty. It is usually knobby somewhat hirsute, and altogether unprepossessing. Much as we like frankness and comfort, we feel that most men should, out of kindness to the great American public, keep their knees concealed.

That reinforces what I've always heard. That fashion trends come and go, cyclical.
Hmmm, where have I heard that work cyclical before???
:D :D :D

Fascinating how far the English language bar has fallen in less than a hundred years. If that were in a paper today, it would read:

Like it or not, the hottest guys you know will be rockin' up on your door step in shorts next summer. The new summer design is pimpin'.

The most popular ones up on the net are bright, short and sexy - with lots of upper thigh for your viewing pleasure - I know, right?

Plus, they're more comfortable so the guys will totally get into them, LOL.

For those guys you know who aren't so hot - the geezers, the sticks, they can stick to jeans through August.

;)

That is a neat find! I love reading old newspaper clippings!

Funny too! Looks like "frankness and comfort' didn't last long after that.
