2 questions(contra-indications to 5-HTP and anti-inflammatories)

Hello all,

So context... I have a new back injury. The doctor thinks it is only muscular not a spinal injury like the herniated disc I had 2 years ago. The doctor gave me some anti-inflammatories, and I am using them. It was hurting bad, and I was walking around town like an 80-year old man. I can study and I can run my errands because of these meds, so in the short term (4 or 5 days), I think it is worth it.

Question 1. The instructions with the medicine say that they should not be taken with serotonin uptake inhibitors. Could this mean that it is not good to take them at the same time as 5-HTP?

Question 2. This is a general question. I am fairly up to date with the medical research done by Dr. Psyche, Laura, and others here. I remember that it has been stated here that long term use of anti-inflammatory pharmaceuticals may eventually defeat the purpose of taking them. Having said that, anti-inflammatory drugs seem to be useful in emergencies like those first few days of awful pain of a back injury. Much of the research here has been about anti-inflammation methods of diet, etc. but these researches are about global lifestyle changes that slowly turn the tables. Have we found any useful alternatives in the emergency sense to anti-inflammatory drugs?

Thanks in advance for any replies...

DMSO works wonders specially in injuries and it is often much more effective than the usual anti-inflammatory and painkillers. What is the name of the drug? Maybe it is not your usual anti-inflammatory, but something that changes brain chemistry as well.

Anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen and related, increase intestinal permeability, which then perpetuate the inflammatory state.

I strongly second the taping recommendation. :)

I have received more consistent relief from taping than from anti-inflammatory medication and morphine-level pain killers that I took for years just to be able to go to work. I just introduced taping to my wife who is also a chronic back-pain person and she has found it very helpful as well.

As to the DMSO, I am trying to get a hold of some but it's illegal in Denmark (except for vets). If anyone has a recommendation as to how to get in within the EU, I'd highly appreciate it.

I hope you get better soon - back pain sucks! :)

A consultation. I think I have a problem in the kidney (urine with foam. Believe it is due to a ureteral obstruction) and I'm taking 5-HTP. They may prescribe a drug that makes serotonin be triggered?. Thanks.

I'm not sure if I understand. Do you mean that 5 HTP could produce an ureteral obstruction? 5 HTP doesn't have that side effect. The only big warning is for those who take anti-depressants (MAO inhibitors) and which case too much serotonin might be produced.

Why do you think it is ureteral obstruction? Do you have pain? In case of doubt, I would get the urine checked.

Thank you, Gaby. I think I have a problem in the kidney area, and going to see a specialist. I'm not saying that 5-HTP can generate these problems. My question is, since I take 5-HTP, the physician may prescribe something that make serotonin rise too much?. And you've already answered. :)
I have no pain, but foam. Before that urinated some fat. So I think in some injury or obstruction.
