Here is a chronology of the major terror attacks that have resulted in the deaths of more than 240 people across France since the 2015 Charlie Hebdo shootings.

January 7-9 2015: Said and Cherif Kouachi, armed with Kalashnikov rifles, storm the Paris offices of satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo killing 12 people. A policewoman is killed just outside Paris the following day, while Amedy Coulibaly takes hostages at a Jewish supermarket, four of whom are killed. The attackers are killed in separate shootouts with police, but not before claiming allegiance to Daesh.

February 3 2015: A knife-wielding man attacks three soldiers guarding a Jewish community center in Nice. The 30-year-old assailant, Moussa Coulibaly, is arrested. In custody, he expresses his hatred for France, the police, the military and Jews.

April 19 2015: Sid Ahmed Ghlam, an Algerian IT student, is arrested on suspicion of killing a woman who was found shot dead in her car, and of planning an attack on a church in the Paris suburb of Villejuif. Prosecutors say they found Daesh-related documents at his home, and that he had been in touch with a suspected extremist in Syria about an attack on a church.

June 26 2015: Frenchman Yassin Salhi, 35, kills and beheads his boss and displays the severed head, surrounded by two Daesh flags, on the fence of a gas plant in Saint-Quentin-Fallavier in southeastern France. He tries to blow up the factory, but is arrested. He commits suicide in his jail cell.

August 21 2015: Passengers prevent a bloodbath on a high-speed Thalys train from Amsterdam to Paris, tackling a man who opened fire on travelers. He was armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle, an automatic pistol and a box-cutter. The gunman is identified as 25-year-old Moroccan national Ayoub El Khazzani, known to intelligence services for links to Daesh.

November 13 2015: France is hit by the worst terror attacks in its history. Daesh extremists armed with assault rifles and explosives strike outside a France-Germany football match at the national stadium, Paris cafes, and the Bataclan concert hall in a coordinated assault that leaves 130 people dead and more than 350 wounded.

June 13 2016: Larossi Abballa, 25, uses a knife to kill a police officer and his partner at their home in Magnanville, west of Paris, in front of their young son. Abballa is killed by a police SWAT team, but has already claimed the murders on social media on behalf of Daesh.

July 14 2016: A Tunisian plows a truck through a large crowd gathered for Bastille Day fireworks on the Promenade des Anglais in the Mediterranean city of Nice. The attack kills 86 people and injures more than 400. The driver, Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, 31, is shot dead by security forces. Daesh claims responsibility.

July 26 2016: Two teenagers slit the throat of an 85-year-old priest in front of five worshippers at his church in the western town of Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray. Abdel Malik Petitjean and Adel Kermiche, both aged 19, are killed by police. The murder is claimed by Daesh. The teenagers had sworn allegiance to the group in a video.

April 20 2017: A 39-year-old ex-convict shoots dead an on-duty policeman and wounds two others on Paris’ Champs-Elysees avenue. Gunman Karim Cheurfi is killed by police and a note praising Daesh is found next to his body, with the group claiming responsibility.

October 1 2017: A 29-year-old Tunisian cries “Allah Akbar” (God is Greatest) and kills two young women with a knife at the main train station in the southern city of Marseille. Ahmed Hanachi is shot dead by soldiers on patrol. His attack is claimed by Daesh.

President Emmanuel Macron led tributes Saturday to a French policeman who died after offering himself as a hostage to help end an attack, becoming the fourth victim of the shooting spree and supermarket siege.

Lt. Col. Arnaud Beltrame, 45, was among a group of officers who rushed to the scene in the southwestern town of Trebes on Friday after an attacker claiming allegiance to the Daesh group holed up in a supermarket following a shooting spree in nearby Carcassonne.

Beltrame offered to take the place of a woman being held as a final hostage by 25-year-old Radouane Lakdim, who had already shot dead the supermarket’s butcher and a customer.

Lakdim, a petty criminal who was on a watchlist over fears he had been radicalized, shot and stabbed the policeman before anti-terror officers moved in to kill him and end the siege.

Macron said the police officer, who hoped to be able to negotiate with the attacker once shoppers were taken to safety, had “died a hero.”

He deserves “the respect and admiration of the whole nation,” the president said.

Lakdim’s partner and a 17-year-old friend were in custody as investigators sought to understand events leading to the attack.

Investigators found notes at his home which refer to Daesh, a legal source said, including a hand-written letter in which he claimed allegiance to the terrorist group.

The shootings come as France remains on high alert following a string of deadly attacks that have killed more than 240 people since 2015.

Lakdim, a Moroccan-born French national, fit a familiar profile as a petty criminal who had turned to extremism.

A small-time drug-dealer, his rap sheet included convictions for carrying a banned weapon and for drug use. He spent a month in jail in 2016. “He had been on a watchlist for his radicalization and links to the Salafist movement,” said top anti-terror prosecutor Francois Molins.

Lakdim started Friday’s rampage in Carcassonne, hijacking a car and shooting the two people inside. The passenger was killed, and the driver remains in a critical condition.

Lakdim then shot and wounded a policeman who was out jogging with colleagues before driving to nearby Trebes and bursting into the Super U supermarket, shouting “God is great” and saying he was a Daesh militant, ready to die for Syria,” Molins said.

He further demanded the release of certain prisoners — notably, according to a security source, Salah Abdeslam, prime suspect in the November 2015 Paris terror attacks.

Deash claimed responsibility for the attack, as is customary when the assailant has pledged allegiance to Daesh.

Experts said the attack showed the evolving nature of Daesh threat.

The persistence of the homegrown threat has largely escaped public debate in comparison to concern over foreign fighters returning home from Syria and Iraq,” said Jean-Pierre Filiu, Middle Eastern Studies professor at Sciences Po university.

The attack has rocked Trebes, a sleepy town of 5,000 located on the picturesque Canal du Midi. “We thought this only happened in big towns,” said a 52-year-old restaurant-owner who gave her name as Khadija.

Supermarket boss Samia Menassi, whose store remains closed and surrounded by police tape, was still in shock Saturday as she recalled hearing the first gunshots. “I said to the girls, ‘Call the police, there’s a terrorist in the shop’,” she told AFP. “We felt powerless because we still had colleagues in there.”

Of around 50 people in the store at the time, most were able to get out through an emergency exit, some after sheltering in a meat refrigerator.

France has suffered a series of major terrorist attacks over the past three years, including the massacre at the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, the November 2015 attacks that killed 130 in Paris, and the 2016 Bastille Day truck attack in Nice.

The most recent assault came in October when a Tunisian man stabbed to death two women at Marseille’s railway station.

A state of emergency put in place just after the 2015 Paris attacks was lifted in October when Macron’s centrist government passed a new law boosting the powers of security forces.

Thousands of French troops remain on the streets under an anti-terror operation known as Sentinelle, patrolling transport hubs, tourist hotspots and other sensitive sites.

Paris Train Hero Alek Skarlatos Runs For County Commissioner In Oregon
May 17, 2018 at 11:39 am
ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) — One of the men who thwarted a terrorist attack on a Paris-bound train is running for a county commissioner seat in western Oregon.
Alek Skarlatos, 25, announced his candidacy Tuesday to become a Douglas County commissioner, The News-Review reported.

The former Oregon National Guardsman from the small city of Roseburg and two friends — Anthony Sadler and Spencer Stone — were traveling in Europe in August 2015 when they incapacitated a heavily armed gunman. They were credited with saving many lives and honored on both sides of the Atlantic.

They re-enacted the encounter in the movie “The 15:17 to Paris,” which was directed by Clint Eastwood and released earlier this year.

Skarlatos also finished third as a contestant on TV’s “Dancing With the Stars.”

Since leaving the guard in November, Skarlatos has been touring the country for public speaking engagements.

“I’ve traveled all over the world, and there’s no place I’d rather live than Douglas County, honestly,” Skarlatos said.

If elected, Skarlatos said he plans to bring more jobs to the rural county, particularly industrial jobs for skilled trade workers.

“Really I think that jobs bring in taxes, and if we can get people jobs that would make the whole community better off,” Skarlatos said.

Serving as county commissioner would provide Skarlatos an opportunity to stand up for values he believes in and to represent a younger generation, he said.

“I think the political climate has led a lot of younger people to become interested in politics, myself included,” Skarlatos said. “I just hope to move Douglas County in a better direction.”

Skarlatos is pursuing the seat vacated by Republican Gary Leif, who recently left the position to become a state lawmaker.

Sacramento Police Chief Sam Somers Jr. announces the arrest of James Tran in the stabbing of Spencer Stone, who was one of the Americans who helped thwart a terrorist attack on a train to Paris

Stone, who recently was promoted to Air Force Staff Sergeant, was stabbed early in the morning of Thursday, Oct. 8, and suffered multiple stab wounds to the upper body, according to the Sacramento Police Department.

Tran is charged with attempted murder.

According to the Associated Press, Stone's mother, Joyce Eskel, said the family was relieved and grateful to learn of the arrest.

The AP adds, "Eskel says her son's injuries were worse than initially reported by doctors. He was knifed four times, not three as doctors said. She says doctors opened her son's chest to repair lacerations to his heart and liver and a collapsed lung."

Authorities have said the attack was not related to the train incident.

Amazing feeling today when you walk into Vientos and Dirty Harry is having lunch. One of my all time favorite iconic movie stars Mr. Clint Eastwood chilling. What an honor to hang out with him for twenty minutes talking movies. Humbleness personified. — with Eva Gomez and Julie Farrell Pressey
.
Clint Eastwood made a surprise appearance at a Pocket-area Mexican restaurant on Tuesday.

The visit was documented on Vientos Mexican Cocina’s Facebook page, which hosted the actor and filmmaker for lunch that day. The post included a picture of Eastwood at the restaurant standing with what appears to be an employee.

“What an honor to hang out with him for twenty minutes talking movies,” the post said. “Humbleness personified.”

Eastwood was in the area because his dog was undergoing knee surgery at a nearby veterinarian's office, a comment from the restaurant explained.

The post garnered several reactions from the restaurant’s fans. Many voiced their surprise over the actor’s visit, as well as disappointment over missing the actor during his visit.

“You're kidding, Clint Eastwood at Vientos,” one woman posted. “Would have loved to see him.”
Eastwood made another appearance in Sacramento last October while working on his latest film, “The 15:17 to Paris." The movie centers on three local men who thwarted a terrorist attack while aboard a Paris-bound train in August 2015. Employees at Vientos Mexican Cocina did not return requests for comment.

Clint Eastwood has said that he may return to acting in the future.

The Hollywood actor and director, 86, :whlchair: has spent more time behind the camera in recent years and last appeared on the big screen in Trouble With The Curve in 2012.

The sports drama was his first film in four years.

Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival, Clint said he would revisit acting “someday”.

The Oscar-winner gave a talk at the glamorous event and there were several screenings of his films, including one marking the 25th anniversary of his award-winning Western Unforgiven.

Clint is currently preparing to direct The 15:17 To Paris, about the 2015 Islamic State attack on a train which was foiled by three Americans.

He said the film suited today’s “strange times”.

He said of making movies: “If you have good luck with your instincts, you might as well trust them.

“It’s an emotional art form. It’s not an intellectual art form at all.”

Unknown People in Masks Open Gunfire in France's Marseilles, 1 Injured - Reports

Security in France has been tense following increased assaults and the state of emergency, which had been in place since the 2015 Paris terror attacks, later being replaced by anti-terror legislation.

A group of masked men has opened fire in one of the districts of Marseilles in the south of France, as a result of which one person has been injured, the local newspaper La Provence reported.

According to reports, the attack was terrorist-related, but police have still not commented on the situation.

Around 18:00, masked men approached the cultural space La Busserine in the 14th district of Marseille on three vehicles. The individuals, armed with Kalashnikovs, opened fire at a group of young people. The area has been cordoned off by law enforcement and firefighters, who are still on site. Investigators are carrying out a preliminary inquiry and questioning witnesses.

The situation in France has been insecure in wake of more frequent attacks and the state of emergency, which was introduced following the 2015 Paris terror attacks and was later replaced by anti-terror legislation.

The law, backed by President Emmanuel Macron, has been criticized by the French politicians as insufficient, as the number of attacks in the country hasn’t decreased, with the latest taking place on May 12, when a knife-wielding man stabbed people in central Paris, killing one person and injuring four others.

The perpetrator of the attack, who was identified as a 21-year-old Chechen-born French citizen, was killed by police at the scene of the incident. The Daesh* terrorist group reportedly claimed responsibility for the assault, while French prosecutors have said that the incident is being treated as a terrorist attack. *Daesh (also known as ISIS/ISIL/IS) is a terrorist group banned in Russia

According to prosecutor Silvi Canovas, the incident occurred in the commune area of Notre-Dame-des-Landes where the protesters tried to prevent the dismantling of illegally populated buildings.

According to the Le Parisien newspaper, the protesters attacked the police forces and the latter were forced to use light-toothed grenades (GLI-F4). One of them tore off a hand of a 30-year-old man who was trying to raise it, eyewitnesses of the clash said.

French Public Sector Workers Protest Against Gov't Reforms (VIDEO)

French public sector employees took to the streets across the country protesting against the economic and socials reforms implemented by President Emmanuel Macron, France Info radio reported Tuesday.

The police have used water cannons against union protesters in Paris, according to BFMTV reports.

Peaceful protests in Paris have turned into riots. Protesters have smashed windows and set on fire trash cans. As a result of the unrest, 17 people were detained, the BFMTV broadcaster reported. Earlier media reports said that police had detained seven masked protesters.

According to BFMTV, more than 16,000 people took part in the protest.

The France Info radio broadcaster reported, nine trade unions representing about 5.7 million people working in the public sector have agreed to carry out joint protests for the first time since 2010 and have organized about 130 rallies, with the one in Paris due to start at 2 p.m. local time (noon GMT).

The news outlet added that public sector employees are protesting against Macron's pledge to gradually cut 120,000 positions by 2022 as well as against the lack of funding provided to the public services.

The situation has escalated recently, when students have shown solidarity with railroad workers protesting Macron's reform in the railway sector.

The sectors of education, energy, health, postal services and transport are expected to become the most affected ones by the Tuesday protests, the media outlet said.
