A drawing

About a month ago, one night I was feeling extreme sadness because of some family related news and I decided to draw how I felt. It actually took me a while to draw & color the whole thing... I finished it tonight and I thought I'd get some feedback on what you guys think. I love drawing stuff like this and going to try to draw more and more. I did this with Manga Studio EX.

I understood MC as saying that the Deetlet effectively conveyed emotion by using contrast. I think the lightness of the background also makes the sadness feel clearer, rather than the mucky muck self pity feeling. Great work Deetlet.

Actually, I don't see the sadness in the picture either, especially if I cover the mouth and just look at the eyes. I notice that you’ve drawn a subtle line (hair blowing in the wind?) across the character’s throat, symbolically separating the head from the body – separating the mind from the emotions. It’s subtle, but it’s there. As the drawing is autobiographical, the symbolism suggests to me a lack of connection to your emotional life, or perhaps just to this sad episode. Is this an accurate reading? Perhaps I’m just whistling into the wind

By saying very effective, I was acknowledging that her use of contrast created the expected result, i.e., her sadness.

It's great to put your emotions in your creativity. Almost like some kind of way of dealing with these emotions gently.

I used to draw anime/manga too! I still draw it sometimes. :)

I don’t know it Mada, the truth is that the only thing I see in Deedlet drawn suggesting sadness are the tears. That’s why I ask MC. :/

I like the feeling of duality that I am getting. On the one hand the colors, flowers and colors of the sky have an expression of "blue sky & sunshine" feeling to it and the second expression for me is of sadness. Very nicely done. Thank you for sharing.

Yes, it IS subtle. Also subtle is, you see her reaching up to try to remove those few loose strands with her hand; in spite of the wind. I think she also looks disappointed and maybe even a little confused.

Beautiful artwork Deedlet. Were you at all consciously aware of what has been mentioned above? Do you think there is any merit to the observation?

When I drew the picture I was experiencing sadness and I wanted to pour my emotions into my drawing so I could move on. I guess a form of 'positive dissosiation'? It's funny because when I drew it, I was very sad but as I said it took me a month to finish it and I wasn't sad for the whole month. So when I would be working on it, I would be thinking- wow I was really sad that day... and just drew the rest of it. When I put the background I played around with it for a while. I thought about making the sky more gray but what stopped me was because the day that I began to draw the picture was a very nice day outside and I remember feeling really sad and crying and thinking it's a nice day but I feel so ikky. So I wanted to draw it as a contrast, that even when it's really nice out you could be crying and time will move forward like the wind-represented by the flowers blowing in the wind.

The hair strands were just a tool for visually expressing the wind's momentum. So in response to

I'm not really sure if this is accurate because I didn't do it consciously. It was just for adding affect in the drawing.

I think the point is that it might be an unconscious expression of a lack of connection to your emotional life.
