Excellent find Elizabeth! This is good to know. Perhaps this is one reason I don't hear much about smart meters in the media anymore. Perhaps TPTB are laying low figuring out some game theory for sheeple manipulation. I wouldn't be surprised if "they" try to SNEAK smart meters onto our homes unannounced. Oops... Oh yeah, Mr & Mrs & Ms. you can opt out but we didn't have to inform you. Details, details... And sneak in some legaleeze like after 6 months one cannot opt out.

Thanks for the heads up Elizabeth, I'm forwarding this to some cyber-friends who are fighting this very same issue in another part of the country.

I really think we have an "Anonymous Hacker" to thank for this ruling, at least in part. The video s/he made showing how easy it was to hack the meter and extract personal use data has certainly made the rounds. We SHOULD be able to refuse these meters based on their health risks alone, but no one will fund a study on the adverse effects of EM fields that's admissible in court.

So THANK YOU "anonymous hacker" for taking the time to make a video showing how insecure these meters are!

Fortunately there is opt-out, but unfortunately the devil is in the details:

Opting out of the smart meter program will carry an additional cost for those who decline the new technology. Customer’s who choose a smart meter with transmitter deactivated will pay an intial fee of $20 and a monthly charge of $10.50. Those who wish to keep their existing analog meter will have to pay $40 initially and $12 monthly.

Suspiciously, why the monthly ($10.50/$12) fee? Whassup with that!?!? Labor and/or Rental fee?

So, TPTB charge you one way or another, it's cheaper with Wifi, why am I not surprised.
And what can you do about your neighbour's or apartment Wifi meters?

Finally, did we talk about this in another thread somewhere, should this thread be merged?
