advise re work

Well, not that it's justification in my view, but the reason they do it is because it's cheaper to employ someone new than it is to continue a more expensive contract.

Don't know if this applies or not but generally, new hires (probation) and part time or reduced hours benefits the company because they don't have to pay into Health Insurance or subject to paying a certain percentage into unemployment Insurance or Retirement funds?

In Aus, generally part-time or casual positions have a higher hourly rate than permanent positions at the same level of qualification. I don't know if that's the case in other countries and I'm not sure whether probation affects health, insurance or retirement though - it's very possible.

Hi guys I'll keep this short and to the point
The meeting went better than expected, was very nervous going in, the guy who was meant to sit in with me couldn't make it. The director (not the one at the meeting last week) and HR member were there, they were very polite and open for discussion, the nerves soon settled.

It lasted 40 min, they answered all my questions in detail (had a list in front of me) in regards to the current contract and allocating hours, we went back and forth on this. Satisfied with the replys, we got to the proposed contract, they were willing to negotiate the hours. I probably could of went the legal route and did state during the discussion that, I would prefer to sort this today rather than look at alternatives because things can get messy, they agreed (I could do without the stress of it to be honest)
If they are willing to negotiate then I'm open for that.

So as it stands. I'm on a 30 hour contract, was hoping for 35 but settled for 30 hours, anything over is paid at the hourly rate. The director said she will be giving me a new client 5hrs every Friday on top of what I already do, plus another client 2 hrs a week starting next week. So all in all it worked out well, thanked them both, said I appreciate how this was handled then left. There was also a bit of learning in this for me .
Thank you all for the support, encouragement and advise much appreciated.

Liam

So relieved it went well. Awesome news.

Thanks stellar,

Was suprised they were not confrontational, think they knew they were wrong and could of handled in a better way. Glad it's sorted.
I felt your stress in reading the post and hoped for justice for you. I have a son who in a similar role has just been dismissed on trumped up accusations of misconduct by staff & dodgy admin as you faced in your first meeting. Morons galore in that industry, I think. A lot of them are there just for pay check & status/ego, not because they care for the clients.
In spite of your worst fears and worries you handled it the best way you knew how and came out on top. Truly happy for you liam.:hug2:

Sorry to hear about your son stellar. I hope everything works out for him.

Something doesn’t quite add up especially given that you’ve had good feedback in the past from your supervisor. Is there an off chance that they have confused you with another non-performing employee?
Some companies take advantage of that system and only keep an employee on for the period of time that they receive the wage subsidies from the government.
My guess - no one representing HR will be available - on Monday, either!
Hi Jones,
Your spot on, this company does take advantage of this government scheme. Very high staff turn over, they are constantly recruiting new staff.

It seems to me from what I've read so far that this company is behaving rather fishy or let's say cruel and sneaky to its employees. Mistreatment. In other words, the company seems to be no good and doesn't deserve good people like you IMO. See all the quotes picked out above. So from that viewpoint I would wholeheartedly agree with Jones suggestion below:

If you think this is the case with your current employer, one idea would be to just do what you have to do to keep the job and get a good reference in the short term, but also be on the lookout for and be making applications for other jobs.

I think there is a good likelihood that you can find a much better company that doesn't treat people like that. I would also do the best I can now in the company, even going along with some of the crazy things they seem to engage in and in the meantime apply for another job. If you have secured another job that satisfies you, you can tell them that you will leave for good. I don't think you have to put up with such nonsense.

Si contente d'apprendre ces bonnes nouvelles, vous vous êtes débrouillé comme un chef mais je suivrai le conseil de voir ailleurs si un post vous conviendrait mieux... Bon courage...

So happy to hear this good news, you've managed like a chef, but I'll take the advice to see if a post would be better for you elsewhere... Good luck....

Hi Pashilas,
Thanks for your input. I agree and will be looking at other options, the only thing keeping me there at the moment is some clients I've had a long time, would hate to leave them. I did explain to them the situation and, as far as I know they can change over to another company, will have to look into that to find out.

Cheers,
Liam.

Hi guys, just an update.

I had an interview friday with a family not far from me, their father who had a stroke requires 24hr care. Got a call today, got the job starting next week two 24hr shifts a week. I have other private clients aswell, will be leaving the agency handing in my notice tomorrow and going fully self employed. I'm taking a chance no holiday pay etc less security, but I have trust that things will work out, like they always do.

Ive spoken with my clients, I've been with through the agency, on one hand are happy for me leaving they know what the agency is like, on the other hand sad to see me go. They are undetstanding and said I have to do what's best for me. The good thing is they are local so will drop round when I can to see them.
