Hello all, for some time now, I've been experimenting with Large Language Models for information extraction from session transcripts. As the transcripts are too large to fit into the model's context, the approach I've taken is the well-known map-reduce pattern.

The first step is to go through all the transcripts one by one with a prompt like: "Extract the information about [x] in the form of unnumbered bullet points. Return <stop> when there's no information to extract." For this, I'm using the DeepSeek-R1 model for its cost-effectiveness, tuned to avoid fabricating information (mainly 0.0 temperature). This step often takes two hours. After that, I'm merging all of the summarized bullet points into one big document and ask a final question. For that I take high quality model like Claude 3.7 Sonnet or Grok 3. The other thing is that models served via API don't contain hidden instructions like those for general-purpose chatting with public access, as business use often doesn't need woke opinions, but rather factual information extraction from the text corpus.

It seems to be working quite well. I wanted to post some results in this thread to avoid hijacking any other one. I'm open to queries from others, but the limitation is that the question needs to be focused on a single concept. Broad questions often miss a substantial amount of detail.

I've attached a document that was my first attempt at this topic - to generate a summary of each session using Claude 3.7 Sonnet. Maybe it'll be useful for someone, as I've spent 20 USD on API credits to reach the conclusion that this is not a good approach, since the summaries still don't fit within the model's context window.

As Large Language Models are getting better and better, I was thinking about the idea of better indexing the sessions, as searching by word is often cumbersome. So my idea is to ask an LLM to generate a list of the most relevant keywords for the text corpus, and in the second step, to generate a key-point and concept-based summary on those extracted keywords, to constrain the model. I was doing this with the idea to later provide a Model Context Protocol server that allows for searching those keywords. This will add the ability for Perplexity or Claude Desktop to search transcripts and retrieve summaries (to not overflow their context window with full transcript).

Below is the result of playing with Google's Gemini 2.5 Pro, which is more cost-effective than others but has good summarization capabilities. All of the transcripts are around 2M tokens, so we still need to wait for models to catch up with very large context windows for full-transcript queries.

Well, it's baked into the model during the text-corpus learning phase, where they're fed a vast amount of text fragments and do self-supervised prediction of the later content to match original text. So, basically, model creators don't have much control over what the model learns; they can do that only by the selection of learning data, but I can't imagine they can do that reliably, as the model needs a HUGE amount of data to learn. The model is later fine-tuned by human-supervised learning, where the knowledge is corrected, like certain topics being restricted to having only one line of thinking. As it was revealed, OpenAI was using pirated books from Anna's Archive or Libgen. Laura's books or session transcripts are present there too. Wikipedia is far too small to learn from the model, but surely it is used for more curated and labelled factual fine-tuning. This is why we often see models going off the rails with clever prompting :-D
